☀ Recently installed solar panels that cover the roof of Diamond Light Source are now fully operational! ⚡ The energy generated by the solar panels is an annual supply of 2.3GWh/y. This output amounts to around 5% of the facility’s total annual energy consumption. 🗨 Gianluigi Botton, CEO of Diamond Light Source, said: "The completed solar panel installation demonstrates our commitment to lowering the carbon footprint of our world-changing science. This is significant in the high-tech, specialised research and development sector that Diamond operates in.” Read more here. ⬇ https://lnkd.in/e2hZBXtv

🧲⏪ 20 years ago, Diamond's storage ring lay empty, awaiting the installation of its first magnets. Now, the ring contains 248 Quadrupoles, 170 Sextupoles, 50 Dipoles and 30 insertion devices. 🔁 However, there hasn't always been this many magnets, with new beamlines being added, some magnets need to be replaced, or even removed entirely. 🤔 But what do all these magnets do? Each type of magnet has a very specific role, and in the following week we will be highlighting what each magnet does and why.

🦠𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗗𝗼 𝗧𝘂𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗕𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮 𝗣𝗼𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗺𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘃𝗲𝘀? 🦠 Did you know that the world's deadliest bacterial infection, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, has a surprising self-destructive behaviour? These bacteria produce toxins that damage their own DNA to halt their growth and evade the immune system. Studies on I04 show how this behaviour could inspire novel therapeutics. Discover the science behind this toxic behaviour and how researchers are using it to fight antibiotic resistance. 📘 Every year, Diamond produces an Annual Review, covering the scientific, technical, computing and business updates from the facility. The 2023/2024 Annual Review of Diamond Light Source reveals a challenging and successful year for its scientists and 14,000 users. 📈 In the last budget year, after peer review of 2,034 proposals for experiments, 1,312 were awarded beamtime. This resulted in 15,972 experimental shifts being awarded across 33 beamlines and eight electron microscopes. Diamond also welcomed 5,398 onsite user visits from academia across all instruments, with an additional 4,078 remote user visits. 🏴☠️ Did you know that some bacteria have developed tiny harpoons that they use to attack and inject toxins into nearby cells? 🧫 This World #AntimicrobialResistance Awareness Week, we are highlighting some past research on these "bacterial harpoons", known as type VI secretion systems. 💊 This secretion system may be a promising avenue for developing new antibiotics which could disable bacteria that employ these harpoons when causing infections. https://lnkd.in/eCzKS6gV

👐 Last week, in partnership with RAL, we were delighted to welcome nearly 100 A-level students and their teachers to Diamond to find out about careers in engineering. 🗣 As well as taking part in workshops and a tour, the students heard from our Graduate Mechanical Design engineer Ella, and undergraduate engineering placement student El about their journeys to Diamond and the exciting projects they are currently working on.
RAL hosted a very exciting event yesterday in partnership with Diamond Light Source, for A-level students interested in pursuing in engineering and science! In true #Tomorrow’sEngineersWeek spirit, the students got hands-on in workshops exploring the power of solar energy and the structural integrity of model cars, creative coding challenges run by Abbott, a careers fair exploring a range of opportunities, and a tour of the inside of the Diamond Light Synchrotron. We look forward to having you back soon! Diamond Light Source
