We had a fantastic time at GovNet DigiGov Expo earlier this week with our Chief Technology Officer Helen Wylie and Deputy Director John Keegan. Helen joined a panel about how organisations can transform their services to empower communities. During the session she explained how championing skills like user research and service design help us understand the people we’re providing services for, the way AI can be used to improve services and gave advice to someone beginning a career in government digital and data. John discussed the future of cyber profession with Dr Claudia Natanson. John talked about how to build a culture of security in the department across 90,000 colleagues and how we bring cyber talent into DWP Digital.

It was a fantastic experience and privilege to share ideas and strategies behind the work I do Greater London Authority especially that DigiGov Expo is one of my favourite events gathering a carefully curated series of insightful talks from across local and central government. Thank you for those who came to speak to me afterwards to ask questions and share their experiences. Thank you also to all my colleagues from the Digital Experience Unit whom I work with every day to make great user experience happen. Big congratulations to Vicky Ridley-Pearson Director of Digital and Technology on her panel discussion where she spoke about making a modern government digital by design. Looking forward to hearing more talks next year!

What an incredible experience at DigiGov Expo! Over two days, I had the opportunity to meet with so many amazing people—customers, partners, and potential collaborators—all united by one goal: shaping the future of digital transformation. The conversations we had reinforced a truth we all know: Digital is not just a trend. It’s a fundamental shift. Yet, like all meaningful change, it’s met with resistance. Transformation requires more than technology. It takes investment, time, and, most importantly, the right mindset. A special shoutout to Mike Hill FBCS, Philip Orumwense CBE, Kean Jones, Patrick Haston, Neal Smith, Magdalena Siwek, @Dave Pearce, Owen Rowland, whose talks provided game-changing insights. One of my key takeaways was the *human connection* in the room. In a post-COVID world, we've seen firsthand the value of digital interactions, but nothing beats real, face-to-face conversations. The energy in those rooms over both days was next level, reminding me that digital transformation is as much about people as it is about technology. As Rich Corbridge (FBCS) said so powerfully: *“It’s not the robots that are coming, it is digital with a human touch.”* A final thought, and a quote that resonated with me, especially when thinking about government and large-scale change: **“We’ve always done it like this.”** The most dangerous phrase in the English language, as **Grace Hopper** once said. Let’s continue to challenge the status quo and embrace the future. Until next year, DigiGov! #DigitalTransformation #Innovation #Leadership #HumanConnection #Change

A great day at the DigiGov Expo catching up with people and attending discussion provoking sessions (and of course, enjoying the entertainment of a real life robot twice my size!). To share my highlights: 🤝 Connected data - if there was one theme that really stood out on the day, it was data sharing to provide citizen services across organisational boundaries. Very important, very challenging. As Lord Francis Maude put it - this will require a mandate and a 'we're all in this together' effort across government. 👂➡ Listening... and acting - both Kit Collingwood (Royal Borough of Greenwich) and Helen Wylie (DWP) spoke about compassion, listening, but also acting, learning enough to get started and iterating. This view particularly resonated with me because I've seen plenty of examples of 'Disco-fever' - the kind where discoveries never seem to end, where organisations are not able to take that first step and outcome delivery seems to never get closer. Personally, you will find me in the camp of 'test and iterate' or 'continuously improve'. 👍 Better services first. Perhaps this is not a new idea but an important one. When asked about balancing 'tech improvements' vs 'service improvements' the unanimous, encouraging view was - 'both, but services first'. Of course, improving services will improve the actual outcomes for citizens, for the government and for the society. Sometimes they will deliver technology improvements along the way too! And sometimes technology improvements can free up money to do service improvements. So it's both, but services (and outcomes) first! If you were there, share your views! #DigiGovExpo #DigiGov #CitizenExperience Adam Brocklesby Caitlin Fields Steph Poole
