𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐫𝐛𝐚𝐧 𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭: 𝐀 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐜𝐡 https://lnkd.in/ge5syGaP Throwback to a project that captures the evolving essence of Shoreditch, where historic architecture meets a forward-thinking community vision. Back in 2020, DaK Architects led the design and planning for a bold community resource building, a landmark at the intersection of Islington and Hackney. Nestled in a vacant urban site—an “urban artifact” between key vistas—our design concept drew on the elegant proportions of the neighboring terraces, with simple forms and rich textures that complement the heritage of Shoreditch. The site connects to Tabernacle Square to the east and forms part of the Shoreditch Gateway to the north, where modern icons like the new Art ’Otel and Shoreditch House residential tower shape the cityscape. Guided by community consultations and pre-application insights, our team of consultants worked together seamlessly to bring this vision to life, aligning with Hackney Council’s vision for a community-centered space. Although now being re-envisioned for residential use, this project stands as a tribute to the blending of old and new, and the rich character of London’s urban fabric. 𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐧 𝐚 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐬 𝐚 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐣𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲 This unique family home, completed in 2017, offered us the chance to create a seamless blend between architecture and nature. As both Architect and Project Manager, we were deeply involved in every development stage, working closely with our client—a developer with a young family—to bring his vision to life. Nestled within a serene woodland plot in Barnet, the design called for a space filled with natural light and unobstructed views of the surrounding landscape. The sloping terrain allowed us to integrate a subterranean, south-facing wing, naturally concealed by the site’s contours to ensure privacy without compromising openness. Inspired by the clean lines of Scandinavian architecture, we kept the structure simple yet powerful, incorporating charred timber cladding and dark grey zinc roofing to harmonize with the woodland setting. Given the rigorous planning policies of LB Barnet against backland developments, our approach needed to be sensitive and aligned with local regulations. After a challenging appeal process, we received Full Planning Permission in 2016, leading to a construction journey throughout the summer and autumn of 2017. This project is a testament to the beauty of thoughtful design and materials that honor, rather than disrupt, the natural environment—allowing the family to feel enveloped by nature in the comfort of their home.
