Dynisma reposted this
A few weeks ago, I drove a £2.5m racing simulator. Not just any sim - one from the company that supplies some of the F1 teams. And apart from how realistic it was, what surprised me the most was how much the F1 teams rely on, and trust, these sims. Here's how F1 teams use sims: - Draw up a new part - Run it through CFD tests - Build a scale version for wind tunnel testing - Gather all the numbers - Create a vehicle software model - Test in a non-driver simulator - Test in a driver-in-loop simulator - Build the real part - Take it to the track - Hope that it works as expected! The engineering behind these Dynisma sims is incredible, and the team have really focused on reducing latency, so the sim reacts as a driver would expect. So, how was it to drive? After some initial adaptation, I got up to speed quite quickly. What impressed me most was how the sim felt on the entry to a corner. I could feel the rear of the car sliding (like the real thing) - the sim was giving me lots of detail and warning. That’s something I’ve never experienced in a sim before. And it meant that I could drive the car right on the limit, and get a perfect feeling of how that car and setup behaved on the circuit. The video will be out on YouTube soon. Thanks to Ash Warne and Sheryll Goddard for the access!
