▶️ In Part 2 of this interview with E-FWD member John Underhill, we get an academic view on the role of plugging and abandonment in decarbonisation. Listen in and discover some of the risks posed by wells that were plugged and abandoned 40 years ago, but are now used for carbon storage. John offers excellent insights into the "technical, data-led, evidence-based approach" used by the University of Aberdeen to help inform decision-making at the North Sea Transition Authority, The Crown Estate, the Crown Estate Scotland, and the wider #energypolicy community. #hydrocarbons #spatialplanning #energytransition #decarbonisation 🎦 Patrice Burnside

Why is subsurface #carbonstorage key to a sustainable future? 🌍 We asked E-FWD Founder Member John Underhill, University Director for Energy Transition and Professor Geoscience at the University of Aberdeen. 🎬 Here's what he said: “The reason we conduct research on subsurface carbon storage in the Centre for Energy Transition at Aberdeen University is to protect UK communities and jobs. To decarbonise our existing manufacturing and industrial base, we need to identify credible sites to store carbon emissions. "The alternative is closing factories and sectors down with the inevitable consequences for employment, security and fuel poverty. While closing down industries would lead to the UK reducing its emissions, it will increase global emissions overall, because we will need to import the products that we use — something we wish to avoid because it is detrimental for the climate. Carbon storage, therefore, helps manage and deliver a just transition.” ▶️ Part 1 of the interview is live now! Check it out below. Stay tuned for Part 2 of John’s interview with Patrice Burnside, coming TOMORROW! 🚀 #EnergyTransition #JustTransition #Decarbonisation #CleanEnergy #EFWD
