Group B Streptococcus (GBS), also known as Streptococcus agalactiae, is the leading cause of severe illness, long term health issues, and mortality in infants. Studies indicate that approximately 12-27% of pregnant women are colonised by Group B Strep(1). Detection and treatment of vaginal (and in some countries also rectal) colonisation by GBS in pregnant women is the most effective strategy to prevent infection transmission during labour. Screening women for GBS helps doctors determine whether intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis is required, which can prevent early onset GBS infections(2). PP1089 Group B Streptococcus (GBS) Medium, based on a formulation set out by de la Rosa et al(1) is a selective medium for the detection and differentiation of haemolytic group B streptococci (GBS) from clinical samples. As pictured, when cultured on PP1089 GBS Medium, -haemolytic GBS strains form very obvious orange pigmented colonies in the absence of oxygen, whereas other species form grey/colourless colonies or are completely inhibited, making differentiation incredibly easy. E&O also offer BM1956-M055-3 LIM Broth, an enrichment broth for Group B Strep samples, available in a polypropylene transport tube and SW0005-Group B Strep Swab Kit, for sampling, transport and enrichment of potential GBS samples. The kit contains a sterile swab for sampling and tube of BM1956 LIM Broth for sample transport and enrichment. To order please contact your E&O Account Manager, or email enquiries@eolabs.com. Detect & differentiate 𝘊𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘥𝘢 𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘴 and other 𝘊𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘥𝘢 spp. with Colorex™ Candida Plus. First identified in 2009 in Japan, Candida auris has since been identified across the globe in over 40 countries, with the WHO grading 𝘊. 𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘴 as a “critical priority pathogen”. (1) 𝘊𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘥𝘢 𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘴 causes bloodstream infections and also infects bones, CSF, and intra-abdominal areas. The pathogen has been isolated from wounds, ears, respiratory tract, urine, bile, and jejunal tissue. Affecting adults and children, 𝘊. 𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘴 spreads in high-risk healthcare settings via shared use equipment and environments. High colonisation rates are particularly noted in long-term care facilities providing ventilator support. This ease of transmission emphasises the need for robust infection prevention and control (IPC) strategies, including screening. (2) CHROMagar’s ColorexTM Candida Plus (E&O Product code PP3018-P090), has been developed for the rapid identification and differentiation of 𝘊. 𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘴 (3) and other major clinical 𝘊𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘥𝘢 spp. • Ideally suited for screening patients suspected of being colonised or infected with 𝘊. 𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘴 • Detection in 36 hrs vs 60 hrs for Sabouraud Dextrose Agar & Chloramphenicol (SABC) • Growth rate and recovery of 𝘊. 𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘴 from pure/mixed cultures is substantially greater vs SABC • Rapid differentiation of 𝘊. 𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘴 from a wide range of other yeast species • Allows for more targeted colony selection for further confirmation When cultured using Colorex™ Candida Plus, 𝘊. 𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘴 produces distinctive colony characteristics compared to other common Candida species: • 𝘊. 𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘴: blue colonies with blue halo, blue colonies from reverse side of plate • 𝘊. 𝘢𝘭𝘣𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘴: green-blue colonies • 𝘊. 𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴: metallic blue colonies with pink halo • 𝘊. 𝘬𝘳𝘶𝘴𝘦𝘪: pink fuzzy colonies • 𝘊. 𝘨𝘭𝘢𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘢: mauve colonies PP3018-P090 Colorex™ Candida Plus comes ready-to-use in packs of 10 with a shelf life of 70 days from manufacture. For more information, download the Colorex™ Candida Plus IFU: PP3018-IFU-Rev-01.pdf To order please contact your E&O Account Manager, or email enquiries@eolabs.com. On October 30th, the UKHSA announced the detection of the first mpox Clade 1b case in the UK, followed in the subsequent days by three additional cases arising from the same household in London. (1) The World Health Organization declared mpox (MPXV) a public health emergency of international concern, following outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of Congo and other African nations (2), with subsequent outbreaks detected in Thailand, Germany, Sweden, and India (3)(4). For mpox sample collection and transport, E&O Laboratories produces Molecular Sampling Solution (MSS), a reagent formulated and validated for the inactivation and transportation of specimens potentially containing a wide range of viral and bacterial pathogens, including mpox. MSS is designed to disrupt microorganisms, denature proteins and nucleases and facilitate transportation of viral samples at refrigerated and room temperatures prior to testing. Viral nucleic acids remain stable in MSS at room temperature for at least 14 days. By using MSS, infection hazard is reduced during transport and laboratory processing whilst preserving nucleic acids for identification by PCR or other nucleic acid techniques. MSS has a shelf life of 2 years from manufacture. MSS transport tubes are also compatible and validated for use with automated laboratory platforms. MSS is available in the following products:- 𝗦𝗪𝟬𝟬𝟬𝟰-𝗠𝟬𝟰𝟯-𝟮 𝗠𝗦𝗦 𝗦𝘄𝗮𝗯 𝗞𝗶𝘁 Comprises a transport tube of MSS (2ml fill) with red swab-capture cap, and a sterile small viscose tipped polystyrene swab with 78mm break-point, all encapsulated in an easy-peel pouch. The swab may be used to collect samples from areas including (but not limited to) the skin, nose, throat, anus and vagina. The swab is not suitable for nasopharyngeal sampling. 100 kits per box. 𝗕𝗠𝟭𝟲𝟳𝟳-𝗠𝟬𝟰𝟯-𝟮 𝗠𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗦𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗠𝗦𝗦) Tray pack of 50 red-capped MSS tubes with 2ml fill.
