Eastern Counties Spoons – sponsored by e-Zee - were on the road again at the weekend, playing Colchesters’ Roman Ruins. No, not a venue, but a team recently established to give older players the opportunity to continue playing the game they love. The day celebrated the 77th Birthday of The Ruins’ oldest player Alan Goggin. Living proof that age is just a number, Alan still plays tighthead prop and has passed on his passion for rugby to his sons and grandsons. Undoubtedly a true force of nature, he is also the ex-British and European Barefoot water-skiing champion and was once a stuntman in a beer advert! He had to earn his birthday cake though. With a guard of honour escorting him onto the pitch Alan then found himself playing in a competitive and combative match. Until the fourth quarter. Then a party atmosphere took over, the referee scored a try, and matters ended with a fifteen-man maul to drive him over the line for his Birthday try! Happy Birthday Alan! Everyone left the pitch smiling and headed to the club house for some fundraising to raise even more money for Wooden Spoon Charity – a charity that raises essential funds to support children that are living with disability and from disadvantaged backgrounds.
