📢 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀: 𝘿𝙞𝙨𝙘𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝘼𝙣𝙚𝙢𝙤𝙞 By popular demand, we’ll be hosting our very first series of training webinars on our Anemoi framework over the weeks of 13 to 30 January 2025. Anemoi is a collaborative and open-source python-based framework for developing machine learning weather forecasting models, developed by ECMWF and national meteorological services across Europe. 𝘋𝘪𝘴𝘤𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘈𝘯𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘪 will feature six webinars, demonstrating the use of key components of the Anemoi ecosystem. 🌍🌐 In our latest #DestinE video, ECMWF’s DestinE Applications Partnership Lead, Jörn Hoffmann, explains the role of partnerships in driving the development of digital twins and the Digital Twin Engine. 💡 Collaborations are essential for pooling resources, tapping into diverse expertise, and driving innovation. 🛰️ 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗦𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 🛰️ Excited for the new EUMETSAT Meteosat Third Generation system (MTG-I1) becoming operational this year? We at ECMWF are 𝙩𝙝𝙧𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙙 and we have prepared something too! With the IFS Cycle 49r1 upgrade, we are introducing new simulated satellite data that replicate the top-of-the-atmosphere visible reflectance and brightness temperature data from the Flexible Combined Imager (FCI) on the MTG-I1 satellite. 📡 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲? We have added 8️⃣ new channels! 📌Parameter Cloudy reflectance is available in one near infra red and four visible channels:  🔹Channel 1 - VIS0.4 - Visible band centred on 0.4µm 🔹Channel 2 - VIS0.5 - Visible band centred on 0.5µm 🔹Channel 3 - VIS0.6 - Visible band centred on 0.6µm 🔹Channel 4 - VIS0.8 - Visible band centred on 0.8µm 🔹Channel 7 - NIR1.6 - Near-infrared band centred on 1.6µm 📌Parameter Cloudy brightness temperature is available in one infra red and two water vapour channels: 🔹Channel 10 - WV6.3 - Water Vapour band centred on 6.3µm 🔹Channel 11 - WV7.3 - Water Vapour band centred on 7.3µm 🔹Channel 14 - IR10.5 - Infrared band centred on 10.5µm 📡 The new channels will enhance our view of the atmosphere and provide valuable insights for extreme weather forecasting. They will also enable the users to, for the first time, replicate EUMESAT's RGB composite images. 📡 Some of the new channels are already visualised via the ecCharts platform. This will soon include one of the RGB composites as well! Thank you to all speakers and attendees for their contributions to the NWP SAF Workshop on Satellite Observations of the Earth System Interfaces, which took place last week at our headquarters in Reading, UK. The goals of this workshop were to: • Provide an overview of the various interface observations which are available to the NWP community as well as of the forward models which are being developed or are already in use to exploit this type of observations. • Assess the state of the art on the use of interface observations both in retrievals and in coupled data assimilation systems. • Understand the direction in which the scientific community is taking this important and complex problem. 🌍🌐 Collaboration is key for advancing Destination Earth. Just over six months into phase II of the #DestinE initiative, experts from all over Europe met in Hamburg for a project meeting and hackathon to discuss crucial next steps and accelerate progress of the Climate Change Adaptation Digital Twin (Climate DT). The Climate DT is implemented by a strong partnership led by CSC – IT Center for Science, in close collaboration with ECMWF. 💻 The four-day hackathon was a perfect opportunity for scientists to work collaboratively on the challenges identified in the project meeting. A major theme of the hackathon was the use of #AI and #MachineLearning and how they can be used to quantify uncertainties in the Climate DT outputs and enhance user interaction. 🇪🇺 The Destination Earth initiative shows how collaboration throughout Europe can drive innovation and progress for tackling the most pressing climate challenges, by bringing together diverse expertise from research, operational centres and industry. 🎥 Watch the video below to hear from scientists about the collaborative work on the Climate DT. ❗New job opportunities at ECMWF in support of ‘Space for Early Warning in Africa’❗ European Commission DG INTPA aims to stimulate partnerships to develop space-based services, applications and tools to strengthen #EarlyWarning Systems of hazardous weather and climate- related events. Subject to approval, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts is anticipated to be one of the implementing partners. ECMWF has currently two exiting new positions in support of these activities: - Partnership Management and Training Specialist (A2): https://lnkd.in/ev6fTSE8   - Data and Cloud Support Specialist (A2): https://lnkd.in/e83sJP23 Activities will be implemented in close cooperation with EUMETSAT and African Union Commission and close partnerships will be established with the African RCCs and the European #NMHSs and other topic specialists on #earlywarning, as well as with World Meteorological Organization and its #EW4All initiative.

Today was the final day of the NWP SAF Workshop on Satellite Observations of the Earth System Interfaces 🛰️    Thanks to everyone who participated and contributed their perspectives. 

The need for robust, high-quality climate and atmospheric composition data has never been more pressing. We look back at our presence at #COP29 to share the importance of data from the #CopernicusClimate Change Service and the #CopernicusAtmosphere Monitoring Service now and in the future.
