We asked businesses what their biggest frustrations were when it came to taking climate action, and the results were eye-opening 👀 Here’s what they said… 👉 #1 - The internal resource needed to carry out the work 👉 #2 - Having limited visibility over emissions in their supply chain 👉 #3 - Financial constraints/cost We speak to organisations every day who say that barriers like these keep them from getting started on their sustainability journey. But taking climate action doesn’t have to be difficult. At Ecologi, we've already helped over 24,000 businesses overcome these obstacles by funding high-quality, high-integrity climate solutions. COP29 might be over but there’s still time to join our Business for Biodiversity campaign 🙌 Given the vital importance of protecting our natural landscapes, we’ve decided to extend the campaign until Christmas to help to fund vital capital for nature restoration. Here’s a video from our Climate Solutions Manager, Eleanor T., highlighting the critical importance of the campaign and its mission to support biodiversity. We're aiming to harness the power of collective action to fund £200,000 via our Ecologi Impact Funds to: 🌳 Plant over 250,000 trees. 🌸 Restore 10,000 m2 wildflowers & wetlands. ☁️ Remove 100 tonnes of Carbon. For every £1,000 contributed before 25 December, we'll plant an extra 250 trees globally. 🌍 COP29: Key takeaways 🌍 We’ve come to the end of our COP29 daily coverage and today we’re wrapping up some of the key takeaways that your business needs to know - swipe through to learn more 👉 • Progress on Article 6: Whilst COP29 has been largely disappointing, particularly regarding the pace of global climate action, there are still some glimmers of hope for businesses such as the progress on Article 6. By advancing frameworks for international carbon markets, COP29 has created a clearer pathway for businesses to participate in global climate action by investing in high-quality carbon credits. • UK government climate policy: The government’s renewed focus on climate policy has also created incentives for the private sector, such as increased funding for green technology, support for nature-based projects and streamlined regulation for sustainable investment, catalysing innovation and market growth. • Heightened geopolitical tensions: This year’s Conference took place amidst a backdrop of heightened geopolitical tensions, which diverted attention and resources away from climate action and further complicated negotiations. • Poor management by the Presidency: The event felt increasingly chaotic, with a sense that the Presidency was not entirely in control. On the draft decisions, the Presidency adopted a bit of a ‘take-it-or-leave-it’ attitude to negotiations which isn’t helpful or conducive to compromise. • Fossil fuels are still the elephant in the room: Global emissions are still rising, driven by continued fossil fuel use – and yet COP29 has failed to advance any fossil fuel reduction commitments. The overall sentiment at COP29 reflects a little bit of progress and an awful lot of frustration. As is often the case at the climate COPs, any progress made is often overshadowed by the missed opportunities – and this one is no exception on that front. Want the full story? We’ve arrived at (what is supposed to be) the final day of the 2024 UN climate change conference in Baku 🗓️ Updates are coming through thick and fast today, so we recommend diving into our ‘What is happening at COP29’ article for all of the latest developments and our full analysis of the events: https://hubs.la/Q02Z9pWz0 Here’s our run-down of the key takeaways so far (as of 14:00 GMT)… 📖 Updated New Collective Quantified Goal (NCGQ) draft text released - The new text “decides” on a goal of $250 billion (USD) per year for developing countries by 2035. Developing countries have previously stated they would need at least $1.2 trillion (USD) per year by 2035, but this text is still a draft, and so countries still have the opportunity to accept or reject the proposition. ✍️ Draft text on mitigation - The latest draft text on mitigation continues to tiptoe around the subject of fossil fuels and fails to even reference the 1.5ºC warming limit or the outcomes from last year’s Global Stocktake. 🤔 Response to the draft texts - Reactions have been far from complimentary. Whilst the Azerbaijani Presidency is calling the latest draft texts “a balanced and streamlined package”, a number of NGOs including Oxfam International, 350, and WWF have commented on the new text, with opinions ranging from “embarrassing” to “inadequate” to “immoral”. #ForOurPlanet #ClimateAction #ClimateSolutions #Sustainability #GreenerBusiness #COP29

We’re nearing the end of COP29 and today’s theme is Nature & Biodiversity, Indigenous People, Gender Equality and Oceans & Coastal Zones. Last night, the draft texts were released, and today negotiators have been debating the specifics. Here's our analysis of the key discussions… 🐠 Whilst all of the attention today remains on the draft texts, there have been no reports on the day's discussion topics, namely biodiversity and oceans. Whilst disappointing, this is unsurprising based on their position within the agenda for COP29. 💰 Undoubtedly the biggest talking point at this year's conference is climate finance for developing countries. So far, nobody has been able to decide who should pay or how much, but the draft text for the New Collective Quantified Goal has revealed two options for what this structure of this goal might look like. You can read our daily updates blog for an overview of each proposed option. 🙌 Unlike the draft text for the New Collective Quantified Goal, the draft texts for Article 6.2 (bilateral carbon trades) and Article 6.4 (UN-managed carbon market) are much more comprehensive and progress has been made in operationalising these mechanisms. Again you can read our daily updates blog for a more detailed overview of each text. 🤔 Mitigation texts have been met with much criticism. The draft text states that nations will strive to keep 1.5C alive and that doing so will require a significant reduction in global emissions, however, there’s no direct mention of fossil fuels or renewable energies. The texts offer no progress on the call to transition away from fossil fuels, risking a huge backward step on all the progress made to date. Yesterday was the Food, Agriculture and Water Day at COP29, and here’s our round-up of the key takeaways… 📣 Leaders at the G20 summit issued a joint statement reaffirming the goals of the Paris Agreement and that “just, equitable climate action must remain at the centre of the global agenda”. It is hoped that this boost from the G20 will encourage the final negotiations along. 📉 The UK, New Zealand and Colombia joined the International Coalition on Phasing Out Fossil Fuel Incentives Including Subsidies (COFFIS), showing their support for the phasing out of fossil fuels. The coalition now has 16 member countries. ❌ More than 30 countries have endorsed the Declaration on Reducing Methane from Organic Waste. Research has found that food loss and waste accounts for 8-10% of annual greenhouse gas emissions. 💰Australia pledged A$50m to the global loss and damage fund; making it the sixth largest contributor. The loss and damage fund was established to support the most vulnerable nations in coping with the loss and damages they face due to climate change. Whilst this pledge was well received, it is worth remembering that Australia is one of the world’s largest exporters of fossil fuels.
