Today, Microsoft published its 2024 Environmental Sustainability Report, detailing progress and challenges in its journey toward ambitious climate goals set in 2020. The report underscores the company’s commitment to becoming carbon negative, water positive, zero waste, and protecting more land than it uses by 2030. Key achievements include a significant expansion in renewable energy, with a contracted portfolio exceeding 19.8 gigawatts across 21 countries. Additionally, Microsoft has made strides in carbon removal, contracting over 5 million metric tons to be retired over the next 15 years. Direct operational emissions (Scope 1 and 2) saw a decrease of 6.3% from the 2020 baseline, demonstrating progress in reducing carbon emissions within Microsoft’s immediate control. However, the company acknowledges challenges, particularly in reducing Scope 3 emissions, which saw a 30.9% increase due to the expansion of datacenters and the embodied carbon in building materials and hardware components. To address this, Microsoft has initiated over 80 measures, including requiring key suppliers to use 100% carbon-free electricity by 2030. In the realm of water sustainability, Microsoft provided clean water access to over 1.5 million people and contracted replenishment projects amounting to 25 million cubic meters of water. The company’s zero waste initiatives led to an 89.4% reuse and recycle rate for cloud hardware and significant waste diversion from landfills. Microsoft's efforts to protect ecosystems resulted in over 15,849 acres of land being permanently protected, surpassing their target by 40%. The report also highlights the company’s global engagement through the Climate Innovation Fund, which has allocated $761 million towards climate technologies. As a proud partner of Microsoft, we are inspired by their relentless drive toward sustainability and their commitment to leveraging technology to drive global progress. As Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella emphasised, climate change is the defining issue of our generation, and the company is committed to leveraging technology to drive sustainability and inspire global progress. As the global community moves towards the ambitious goal of the International World of Zero Waste, manufacturing firms find themselves at a crossroads of opportunity and responsibility. By integrating Zero Waste principles with Energy Management Systems (EnMS), these companies can play a pivotal role in this worldwide movement, driving sustainability and operational efficiency. Zero Waste is an integral part of the global effort to eliminate waste and maximise resource use, aiming for a circular economy where everything is reused, and nothing is discarded. This approach aligns perfectly with the goals of the International World of Zero Waste, emphasising the elimination of landfill and incineration waste. For manufacturers, this means redesigning products and processes to minimise raw material use, reduce energy consumption, and virtually eliminate carbon emissions. Integrating Zero Waste strategies with EnMS allows companies to monitor, control, and optimise their energy usage more effectively while committing to sustainable waste management practices. This dual approach not only advances energy efficiency but also supports a global mission to reduce environmental impact. Benefits include: • Reduced Costs and Environmental Impact: Lowering waste and optimising energy usage cuts operational costs and supports global sustainability efforts. • Enhanced Reputation: Aligning with international sustainability goals improves brand image among consumers and stakeholders. • Future-Proofing: Meeting or exceeding regulatory requirements ensures companies stay competitive in a world moving towards stricter environmental standards. By adopting Zero Waste and efficient energy management, manufacturing firms not only contribute to their bottom line but also join a global movement towards sustainability. This commitment positions them as leaders in the transition to a more sustainable, zero-waste future, echoing the goals of the International World of Zero Waste and highlighting their role in shaping a greener planet.
