We're hiring: Director of Venture Creation. Join one of the world's most innovative university teams and unlock innovation to create ventures of scale for economic and social impact. Edinburgh Innovations (EI) is the University of Edinburgh’s commercialisation service. Working with academics and other professional services staff, we identify and unlock innovation across the University, partnering with entrepreneurs to create high-quality startup and spinout companies, with a focus on three core missions of Future Health and Care, Data, Digital and AI, and Climate and the Environment. The newly created Director of Venture Creation role is an exceptional opportunity to build on past success and drive future venture strategy, creating a sustainable ecosystem that delivers University, economic and societal impact. As a key member of our Leadership Team, you will lead a team which is a true enabler of new companies; both stimulating the entrepreneurial ecosystem and helping founders in the early stages to shape their vision and build their companies from scratch. The Venture Team supports the development of initial business plans and connects founders to other entrepreneurs, advisors, NEDs and executive teams. The team will help map out and develop a funding and investment strategy, acting as a bridge between research and commercial development. The ideal candidate will bring a track record of building companies of scale, ideally from a university or research base. Experience within a technology, deeptech, AI or life sciences environment will be key to success. You will bring experience of building strategic relationships with investors and funders and of leading, building and inspiring teams; developing strategy and implementing change. At a personal level, you will demonstrate a passion for EI’s vision, together with the entrepreneurial and dynamic mindset to help build a vibrant and entrepreneurial ecosystem. The Director of Venture Creation will be someone with credibility with external stakeholders and the ability to articulate the mission of EI to a wide range of audiences. The BBC investigates the urgent need to invest in the fast-moving field of #bioengineering with a feature on Professor Stephen Wallace and Dr Jo Sadler and their remarkable research. The previous government made #EngineeringBiology a national priority, and with funding, it could help Labour achieve two of its five big priorities: growth and sustainability. A new House of Lords report says small policy tweaks could make a huge difference, such as recommitting to the target set out in the National Vision for at least £2 billion of funding over the next decade. Professor Susan Rosser, co-director of the Edinburgh Genome Foundry, told the Lords Science and Technology committee, which produced the report, "we were ahead of the game, but we have lost that leadership because of substantial investments in the US and Korea...If this is genuinely going to be a key part of our economy, we need the skill set trained, and as soon as possible." https://lnkd.in/epvh5yYN College of Science and Engineering, The University of Edinburgh | Emma Elliott | Philip Ellis | Rachel Harvey | Susana Direito, PhD | John Morrow | Lorraine Kerr | Andrea Taylor | Charlotte Lee-Woolf
