About us

Edinburgh University Students' Association is an autonomous, student-led campaigning, membership organisation providing services, representation and welfare support at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. The Students' Association is the oldest students' union in the UK, originally founded as the Students' Representative Council (SRC) in 1884 by student Robert Fitzroy Bell. Shortly afterwards the SRC voted to fundraise and establish a union building, the Edinburgh University Union (EUU), now known as Teviot Row House. The Edinburgh University Women's Union was founded in 1906, becoming the Chambers Street Union in 1964. On 1 July 1973 the SRC, the EUU, and the Chambers Street Union merged to form EUSA. The Students' Association supports and oversees over 280 official student societies which provide a range of activities, events and opportunities across the student body, as well as offering a year round volunteering service for UoE students during their time in Edinburgh. The union also directly organises regular and seasonal events such as Welcome Week, club nights, pub quizzes, band nights, comedy, and the Graduation Ball. The Students' Association is a democratic membership organisation, a charitable body and a company limited by guarantee. The Students' Association also has complete ownership and control over a subsidiary company, EUSACO, incorporating any activity which is outside of the Students' Association's charitable remit, such as Edinburgh Festival and external catering activities.

  • 📣 Last month we welcomed 42 newly elected students into their roles through our October Elections. From Postgraduate School and University-wide Representatives to our new Trans and Non-Binary Representative, we can't wait to see all the work they get to in their roles. But that's not all! This year we planted a tree for every 4 voters in the elections. We are incredibly proud to announce we have planted 422 trees with JUST ONE Tree which will remove approximately 129.98 tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere over the next 25 years. 🌳 We want to congratulate all our candidates who spent time flyering, posting on social media, and chatting to our members about the importance of having their say on the students who’ll represent them next year!    You can view the full results here: https://lnkd.in/ed37rmai

  • Some great work from your Vice President Community! So inspiring to see our students get behind sustainable action, we can't wait to follow you on this journey ♻

The first Student Sustainability Collective was a success! ✊♻️ We (Edinburgh University Students' Association) hosted 40 students from all across the university to discuss how sustainability could be improved and the best way to get students to participate. The conversations were inspiring, interesting, and productive. We have a long, long list of ideas to take away and work on but I can’t wait to get started! A huge thank you to The University of Edinburgh Department for Social Responsibility & Sustainability (Matthew Lawson and Sarah Anderson) for collaborating with us for the second year on this project and being so supportive. 🤝 The next event in this series will be in January on Kings Buildings campus. And I couldn’t have done this without Scott Quinn 💚 Finally, big shoutout to the students who said they want canteens at Edinburgh! I’m working on it 😉

  • Welcome Week 2024 round-up ✨   Last week we proudly welcomed both returning students and over 19,000 new faces to the University of Edinburgh with a wide range of exciting events and activities - ranging from language taster sessions and liberation meet-ups to city tours and club nights. Welcome Week is a special part of the university experience, and this year was no exception!    We hosted and supported 315 events, including 169 student-led activities, and saw 44,000 visitors enter our GEM on Bristo Square. At our commercial stall, we gave away a whopping 4,000 prizes!   We were thrilled to see 500+ postgraduate students at our Postgrad Mixer, 300 attendees at our Big Queer Mixer, and 1,500 students joining our See the City Tours to explore and get to know their new home.   This week would not have been such a huge success without all the amazing hard work from our 101 volunteers plus the wonderful staff at the Students’ Association. A huge thank you to you all! 👏   We can't wait to see what the rest of the year has in store!

    • 2 students smiling and holding hands during the roller disco.
    • A group of students huddled around a phone during a quiz.
    • A group of students talking and smiling with each other. One has a drink in one hand and the other hand on her chest.
    • 2 students at a stall in the GEM during Welcome Week. One is about to spin the wheel to win a prize and is smiling. The other is looking at their phone.

Last week we came together as an organisation to host our bi-annual Staff Day where we were able to meet with colleagues across all departments of the Students’ Association. It was great hearing updates from all areas of the organisation, especially from our CEO Stephen Hubbard, and our Sabbatical Officer team who talked us through their manifesto points and targets for the year ahead. We were delighted to have guest speaker IndigoLeap to share current insights and trends of Gen Z to better understand our student audience and better adapt out communications, spaces and services.   We also took the opportunity to recognise and celebrate colleagues who go the extra mile for their colleagues and/or our members and help make the Students’ Association a great place to work through our Staff Awards and Long Service Awards.    Congratulations to our Summer 2024 Staff Awards Winners:  🎉 Penny Thompson  Richard Cape Mark Duncan   Stephen Ruthven  Robin Gay Courtney Hughes   And to our Staff Awards runners-up:   Anne Hunter, Clair Halliday, Katie Griffiths, Mario Montoya, Rona Swan, Sarah Hall, Sarah MacDougall, Sarah Stirton-Andrew    And to our Long Service Award recipients:   Stephen Hubbard and Sarah MacDougall who have been working with us for 10 years.

  • Look at them go! This week we finished our annual Big Sort, where a team of amazing volunteers sorted through thousands of items to be repurposed and sent off to a new home 🎉 Thanks to their help, and contributions from IKEA, we were able to keep as much out of landfill as possible, reducing, reusing and recycling some weird and wonderful treasures. In collaboration with The University of Edinburgh, goods will be directed to Welcome Week's Take What You Need Fair, local charities, community groups and our sustainability partner Bright Green Environmental Solutions. 👉 Learn more about Big Sort here: https://lnkd.in/e-6WNTwZ
