New research shows that science communicators from marginalised backgrounds challenge STEM cultural norms. 🤔 An open-access paper in the Journal of Science Communications outlines the critical need for science communication training that accounts for historical oppression and discrimination. The paper summarises research into how marginalised scientists' identities influence their science communication practices, finding that marginalised scientists aim to change the culture of STEM through their communications. https://lnkd.in/e7zTEhPw

How can we equitably care for Indigenous nonhuman genomic data? A new article in Science Magazine explores the ethical considerations of collecting nonhuman genomic data that is guarded by Indigenous peoples. The article outlines how genomic data collected from animals, plants and fossils under Indigenous guardianship are routinely shared through open access platforms such as GenBank, which can exacerbate historical inequalities that push Indigenous researchers to the periphery. https://lnkd.in/g67CXdAq

What does belonging mean in STEM? 🤔 A new open access publication by UCL Press brings together scholars, teachers, practitioners, and students to explore belonging and identity in STEM fields. Among other things, the book explores how positivitist approaches and a focus on numerical data can lead to assumptions that STEM is unemotional and impersonal, which can be exclusionary. https://lnkd.in/e969Drnq
