Could using ChatGPT - alongside a guide to support its effective use - help cut teachers’ lesson preparation time? There’s a lot of interest in how generative AI can be made best use of in schools, particularly to save teachers’ time. 🔍 But little evidence on how to use it well. We’ve published new research teachers’ use of ChatGPT for lesson and resource planning and the impact on their workload. ❓ What did we do? 259 teachers in 68 secondary schools across England took part in the randomised controlled trial. Of those, 129 teachers in 34 schools were randomly allocated to use ChatGPT alongside a guide on effective implementation, to support lesson and resource preparation for their Year 7 and 8 science classes. The guide was designed by Bain & Company's Impact practice with input from a number of schools and education charities, and funded by The Hg Foundation 🌟 What did we find out? Our independent evaluation, led by National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) found that lesson planning time was reduced by 31 per cent for teachers in the group who used ChatGPT, compared to those who did not. Most teachers in the ChatGPT group were positive about the guide, agreeing that it was easy to understand and relevant. Teachers most often used ChatGPT for specific tasks like creating questions and quizzes and generating activity ideas rather than entire lesson plans. The analysis suggests that there was no noticeable difference in quality between the resources produced with the help of ChatGPT, and those that were not (this finding was based on a small sample of resources, so should be treated with caution). 💡 Find out more You can find out more about the research in our news story: https://eef.li/6ZA5w5 The guide that was used in our trial is now freely available: https://lnkd.in/eynyiXaz.
