Becca's Miles for Smiles: Bringing Water to Koch Goma School! 💧🏃♀️🩷 In October 2023, Becca and her son travelled to Uganda on an Edukid trip. During her visit, she noticed that the water source at Koch Goma school, previously constructed by the local government, had become unreliable and inadequate for the school and surrounding community. Motivated to make a difference, Becca, her husband Rick and family set out to raise money for a new, more reliable borehole that would provide clean, safe water to the children and the wider community in Koch Goma, Northern Uganda. Fast forward to today, and their “Miles for Smiles” journey has been truly inspiring! 🏃♀️🏃♂️ From running events like the Bristol Half Marathon, Manchester Marathon and Bristol 10k, Becca and Rick have been tirelessly raising funds for this vital cause. And the fantastic news is that the borehole is now ready to use! With the students returning to school in Uganda in February, this will be such a wonderful welcome for them, ensuring clean water is available when they arrive. What a beautiful start to the new school term! A massive THANK YOU to Becca, Rick, and their family for their hard work and dedication – and to everyone who has supported them along the way!

Over the half-term holiday, 16 Sixth Form pupils and two staff members visited Cambodia, where they engaged with four schools and projects supported by Edukid - Education for a Brighter Future and Care for Cambodia. Ashville sponsors children in a Cambodian village, helping them attend school, and the group brought Ashville Cricket shirts as gifts. The pupils enjoyed activities with the local children, including making friendship bracelets, playing sports, face painting, and art projects. They also met university students who had previously been supported by the programme, learning about their studies in finance, IT, and food science. They also got to sample traditional snacks like crickets and frog legs, explored local markets, and visited the Killing Fields, the genocide museum, and Angkor Wat temples, which offered profound insights. The experience left pupils with a new perspective on their own lives.

When we heard we was more than happy to help her, providing brand new clothing 👕 ⚽🥅 John Powell from DISCA heard what we were doing and offered to sponsor which helped with the costs. The Edukid team are currently on a trip in Cambodia and last night was a very special evening for Emily and the students in Cambodia. Emily from bluesoup had the opportunity to meet the university students bluesoup are supporting. Emily met Prom Chan Dara, Nou Rathana and Peniel Phe to hear about their university studies and plans for the future. Our in-country partners quoted, "These are 3 of our high flyers, studying IT, Finance and Food Science". Thank you so much to bluesoup for your support! This month, our own Ben Duhig visited Uganda with Edukid - Education for a Brighter Future to carry out some truly impactful support work! For those who don't know, Edukid is a fantastic charity that helps children in Uganda, Cambodia, and Peru access education, breaking the cycle of poverty. 🌍 Ben’s journey allowed him to witness firsthand the difference that access to education can make in these communities and the incredible impact that support can have. ⚽️ THANK YOU! A big thank you to Farringtons School & West Croft School! Early this year, the students of Farringtons learnt that many of the children in Uganda play football with no boots, in fact they were playing bare foot. They decided that they would like to donate their football boots to the local school children that Edukid support. Thank you so much for your very kind donation of 67 pairs of football boots! A massive thank you to Westcroft School for the donation of football shirts to Uganda. Football is such a popular and loved sport within the local community, and your football shirt contribution has made it even more special. Thank you to both schools for your kind donations! As you can tell from the photos, the students are thrilled to wear their new shirts and boots and show their team spirit!

What an amazing week. Just back from co-leading an Edukid - Education for a Brighter Future trip of 33 students, aged 15-18, and 3 teachers to Uganda. We spent 4 days meeting the staff, students and parents at Wilacic Primary School in Gulu, in the north of Uganda. Whilst there we visited families living in extreme poverty. Of the two visits I made, I met an 82yr old grandmother who was looking after 3 children after their father had died and the mother (her daughter) had died in childbirth. The grandmother was too old and infirm to work, and relied on sporadic monthly payments of 20,000 shillings (about £4) from her son to provide for herself and the children. The other family was a mother with 7 children from 20 down to 5 years in age. She had lost her husband to malaria. She had had to take her elder children out of school to work to raise enough money to buy food and clothes. Each family ate just once a day, twice if they could make dinner leftovers stretch to breakfast. We bought all families emergency supplies consisting of rice, maize flour and beans, and we were able to improve their quality of life by buying foam mattresses and blankets (most slept on the floor with a sheet). We also paid to have a Banda roof replaced which was leaking. And to help provide a longer term income we bought goats and left each family with a banana tree to plant. But most importantly, across the whole group, we were able to secure sponsors for 16 students which is humbling and amazing. Education remains the single most important solution to breaking the cycle of poverty from which these families are trying to escape. We met families who were prioritising school fees over food, such is the importance they place on the opportunity of education, something we take for granted. As they say, one person can’t change the world, but you can change the world for one person. The students and teachers we took to Uganda did that 16 times over and leave with lasting memories and friendships! Fair play. And on the way back we squeezed in a trip up the Nile and a morning safari. Hippos, crocs, lions, elephants, buffalo, giraffes, wart hogs and a hyena amongst others…..
