Has EdTech really failed, or are we missing the bigger picture? I’ve been reflecting on two recent critiques—Jared Horvath’s argument that EdTech hasn’t delivered on its promises, and Laurence Holt’s challenge that it often only works for a small minority of students. Both raise important points, but from a methodological perspective, I think there’s more to the story. In this post, I’ll share my take on these critiques and why I believe it’s time for the field to level up its approach to impact evaluation. Let’s start the conversation.

The secret to our success… The majority of organisations are closed doors; they build everything themselves, they hoard data, create black boxes, and so on. We took a different approach at |= Eedi sharing data openly, and collaborating endlessly. It wasn’t easy, we’ve made tough calls but no one organisation will solve the issues that exist within education, but by working together we can achieve more!

We are excited to announce the launch of our first report on Exploring AI and EdTech in Maths Teaching 🎉 This report, authored by David Monis-Weston, is the result of over 100 interviews with teachers, maths specialists, technologists, researchers, and policymakers. Here are 5 key takeaways: 1️⃣ There is a strong case for EdTech that empowers maths teachers to teach whole classes – not just personalised learning. However, we need to address the issue of tech distracting or wasting time, and the challenges of school commissioning, deployment and maintenance of the infrastructure to make it work. 2️⃣ Generative AI shows promise in maths teaching, but it is still unclear where it can outperform current teaching methods in terms of reliability and accuracy, while being pedagogically sound. 3️⃣ To maximise EdTech’s impact in maths teaching, we need to better align technology, platforms, curricula, pedagogical guidance and teacher development. 4️⃣ More experimentation is needed to see how AI can help teachers make better use of their time and focus on what matters, including addressing workload issues and improving professional development. 5️⃣ Schools and teachers need better tools to choose effective EdTech, with clearer definitions of quality, reliability, learning science and impact and opportunity costs, and rapid evaluations that provide timely insights into the emerging technology.
