Is Net Zero by 2050 dead? 2040 is an ambitious target, and 2050 is the red line - but are we on track to get there? In my podcast discussion with Felicia Jackson (https://lnkd.in/evgH6U4J), I make the case as to why carbon neutral is essential if we have a hope of reaching our climate goals.

Pleasure to share my thoughts with Ben Cooke from The Times about the carbon credit market. I think we need credits of all varieties, the real issue is the quality and providing clear additionality. Some others think Removal credits should be the only game in town. All thoughts welcome.
The carbon credits market has had a rough couple of years. A series of exposés by the Guardian, Bloomberg and others have shown that many carbon credits are worthless. The market has lost two thirds of its value. But in the wreckage of the carbon credits market, a group of companies have sprung up that believe they can save it. Their plan is simple: only sell credits that represent carbon removed from the atmosphere. This might sound like a no-brainer: don't all carbon credits represent that? Actually, no. 88 per cent of credits represent carbon emissions not removed, but avoided. Avoided, for instance, by stopping rainforests being cut down. Investors have concluded these "avoidance credits" are dodgy, because how can you know whether the rainforests would have really been cut down had they not been sold? By comparison, you can know for sure that a "removal credit" has value, because you can quantify the amount of carbon taken out of the atmosphere by carbon-capturing tech such as Climeworks' facility in Iceland. “Everything is much more provable in carbon removal,” says Eamon Jubbawy, founder of the carbon-removal registry Isometric. “You have evidence that the carbon started in place A and ended up in place B.” Not everyone is so opposed to avoidance credits, however. Chris Hocknell, a director of the sustainability consultancy Eight Versa, advises his clients to buy half avoidance credits, and half removals. He describes avoidance credits as a “necessary evil”, because they are often the only way to ensure that it’s more economical to leave a forest standing than to cut it down. Can you cheat your way into being Carbon Neutral? There’s a myth that "carbon neutral" is the easier, greener cousin of Net Zero—more room for greenwash. But with the rigours of the new ISO standard, that’s not the case. Catch my chat with Felicia Jackson on Shaken Not Burned to hear why: https://lnkd.in/evgH6U4J

Out with the Old, in with the New The UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard (UKNZCBS) is the construction industry’s new rulebook—more ambitious, more complex, and decidedly more serious about carbon than anything we've seen before. Gone are the days of offsetting your way to 'green' credibility; the UKNZCBS demands real, measurable reductions by treating embodied and operational carbon as one in the same. With tough carbon thresholds and a fossil fuel-free mandate, it’s like a green revolution for your building's carbon footprint. But don’t worry, it’s not all doom and gloom—this article explores how the standard could be the kickstart we need for truly sustainable construction. #NetZeroBuildings #SustainableConstruction #CarbonReduction #GreenBuildingStandards #UKConstruction https://lnkd.in/ea4qxPVj

Are your carbon credits out of date? It’s not just the quality and transparency and co-benefits of the offsetting project. In this short clip, I explain one of the standards which the IPCC have laid out in the new Carbon Neutral certification: don’t accept carbon credits which are more than 5 years old. Other insider tips and tricks are explored in the full Shaken Not Burned podcast recording: https://lnkd.in/evgH6U4J

The annual COP climate summit never fails to stir up debate, and this year was no exception. Hosted by Azerbaijan, a country deeply reliant on fossil fuels, COP29 raised familiar questions about the credibility of its hosts and the effectiveness of global climate action. Amidst the controversy, there were glimpses of progress: a push for climate finance, incremental steps towards a global carbon trading framework, and a growing sense of pragmatism. But what do these developments mean for businesses navigating the complexities of sustainability? Discover key takeaways, our impressions of the conference, and what it all means for your decarbonisation strategies in our latest article. #COP29 #ClimateAction #CarbonCredits #EnergyTransition #Sustainability #NetZero https://lnkd.in/ecprWWW4

Too many companies are in a rush to claim Net Zero or Carbon Neutral. Real impact starts with the boring stuff: emissions reductions in the obvious places. Committing to a target for your business out of peer pressure or ideology, without a practical implementation plan must be avoided. While it might look good on the website, the impact will be negligible. For a deeper dive into what companies should be doing instead, listen here: https://lnkd.in/evgH6U4J
