About us

We specialise in high-value and complex patent matters. Our multidisciplinary team combines patent attorneys, litigators and commercial IP lawyers in three of the world’s main patent markets - Germany, UK and USA and now also in the Nordics through our recent expansion into Sweden. Our patent drafting, prosecution and challenges practice obtains and defends high-value and complex patents for clients, and invalidates patents held by others during post-grant proceedings including oppositions at the European Patent Office (EPO). EIP’s litigation practice has built a strong reputation for quality and success amongst its competitors and clients, with a strong track record including success in a landmark ruling on Standard Essential Patents (SEPs) from the UK Supreme Court. Increasingly our patent attorneys work closely with the litigation team in the UK and Germany providing additional technical expertise on large scale international patent litigation matters. We have represented clients in hundreds of oppositions before the EPO. We counsel clients on strategic patent portfolio development, and have implemented high-level IP strategies for some of the world’s largest companies. We also offer commercial advice on the exploitation and use of the full range of Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) including patents, trademarks, design rights, copyright and other ancillary issues arising in relation to data protection and rights of privacy.

The role of IP in growing business partnerships! IP is often thought of as a tool to protect your company and keep competitors out. However, it plays a vital role in developing partnerships, whether that be with suppliers, customers, or collaborators. Don't miss out on our first webinar of 2025, where we’ll be exploring the journey IP takes through a technology company, and how to develop an IP strategy that supports strong business partnerships. Brought to you by Ampliphy, our legal service for semiconductor and electronics businesses, and in collaboration with NMI - National Microelectronics Institute, we’ll share practical tips and insights from leading experts. The webinar will be led by our very own Andrew Thompson and Mark Lubbock, and we are delighted to be joined by Anne McAleer, Head of IP at Paragraf. Join us on Wednesday 22nd January: https://lnkd.in/dMnrJzgp

    Patent Scientist at EIP

Last month, I moved to Tokyo. I'll be living here for at least a year, continuing my training towards becoming a UK and European Patent Attorney, and also using my hard-earned Japanese language skills to help EIP's Japanese clients in securing patent protection in Europe for their inventions.

If you have a STEM degree and a Patent Attorney career on your mind, read on.   ⏳3 Months⌛ It hasn't been long but becoming a trainee at EIP has been quite the experience! Both challenging and rewarding. There are lots of similarities with Academia but also some notable differences.  Here are my insights and tips so far:   1. 🔍 Read, read and read: Even outside your technical field! Whether you're learning about the latest business updates for a specific country, or reading about a new technology, you're developing a unique skillset or bank of knowledge. Don't be scared of reading about CRISPR/Cas9 as a Mechanical Engineer: it's all about stepping out of your comfort zone and learning something new.   2. 💡 Talk to people: Colleagues, clients, inventors... you'll learn from people just as much, if not more, than from books. Don't be scared of reaching out, asking for feedback, and sharing your ideas. At the end of the day, you all need to be on the same page to draft "The Perfect Patent Application".   3. 🕰️ Eyes on the clock: Do you remember that one time (OK, many times) you accidentally snoozed all of your five 8 a.m. alarms and were late for your 9 a.m. lecture? Time management is often easy to overlook in this context. If you have a deadline, don't think "I'll finish it at some point this week", but rather "What are the tasks? How much time should I spend on each task? Can I allocate time to revise my complete work?" Planning ahead is not trivial and will save you time!   4. 🧑💼 It's a Patent, not a Paper: As a PhD student you may pick up the latest published paper on Wireless Power, read the abstract, the results, and the method. In that time, you'd have already developed your own idea about the paper, and what the authors meant, perhaps thinking about what you'd have done differently. It's not the same when reading a patent application. The invention is what is written in the claim, and not what you think it could have or should have been.   5. 🎉 Enjoy: Do you ever think about that lab report you wrote in your first week of Uni? Probably not your finest work after revisiting it with the hindsight of a 4th year student. Similarly, it takes time to master each aspect of the job of a Patent Attorney, and it's important to be ready to learn. In the meantime, get to know your team, appreciate small wins, and settle into your new role.   Do any other Trainee Patent Attorneys have any tips they'd like to share? If you are think of joining the profession, or if you just want to ask some questions, message me! I'm happy to talk it all through with you. P.S. The picture below with Stuart McKellar, PhD is from this year's amazing EIP Christmas Party. 🎄 🥂

It is the time of year for reflections and predictions! Working with patents as I do, I am curious about innovation in healthcare and keeping up with such innovation is also an important component of what I do for clients. However, even five years ago, I could not have imagined that this would lead to providing expert predictions relating to Artificial Intelligence in TechRound! Perhaps a consequence of the interdisciplinary practice at EIP.

The High Court has ruled in favour of American luxury fashion company Thom Browne in its multi-decade, multi-jurisdictional dispute with German sportswear giant adidas. Mark Lubbock and Dalton Tucker of EIP comment on Thom Browne's UK victory, which follows other favourable rulings in the United States and Germany.  https://lnkd.in/eKcUWMtr

    Swedish and European Patent Attorney

Last night, I had the pleasure of attending the annual TechWorks Awards in London with my colleague Andrew Thompson. It was a fantastic evening celebrating innovation in the tech sector. While the black-tie dress code added a touch of glamour, I couldn’t help but smile at the thought that many of us—myself included—probably feel more at ease in our trusty ESD sandals than in a rented tuxedo. At EIP, our dedicated team specializes in strategic advice and patenting within the electronics and semiconductor industries.
