Top Start-Ups of 2024 - Ligna Energy Name: Ligna Energy Website: www.lignaenergy.com Founded: 6.5 years ago Location: Norrköping, Sweden Industry: IoT/home automation/electronic shelf labels Technology: Sustainable energy storage Ligna’s supercapacitors utilise various biomaterials, such as active carbon from the coconut industry, as well as other material components from the wood/paper industry. All its products contain organic electrolytes. This makes them much less harmful than conventional Li-Ion batteries and other supercapacitors. A spin-out from Linköping University, Ligna Energy is focused on developing slim, highly durable supercapacitors. These will be used in IoT deployments based on energy harvesting. The major differentiator here is that the company is looking to maximise energy storage performance while simultaneously keeping down the environmental impact involved. The underlying organic electronics research behind this was conducted by Linköping University’s Prof. Magnus Berggren, Prof. Xavier Crispin and Prof. Olle Inganäs. The roll-to-roll production technique being utilised gives the company a highly cost-effective and scalable arrangement. It’s currently in the process of bringing their first high-volume production line into operation (capable of manufacturing 5 million units annually). This will provide the unit numbers needed to satisfy growing demands, yet also minimise carbon emissions. Much of the financing for this has come from the Euro 760k bridging round the company completed in late 2023, as well as the Euro 870k funding jointly received by it and partner Ynvisible Interactive Inc from Vinnova. In total, it has gained almost Euro 5.7 million in financial backing. Among the venture capital (VC) investors contributing are Cebon Group, Klimatet Invest, Navigare Ventures and Neptunia Invest. As Ligna Energy’s CEO, Peter Ringstad explained to EPDT; “With IoT roll-out set to... Top Start-Ups of 2024 - VoxelSensors Name: VoxelSensors Website: www.voxelsensors.com Founded: 4 years ago Location: Brussels, Belgium Industry: 3D perception Technology: AI/XR/robotics/drones Originating from the imec.istart incubator, VoxelSensors has indisputable engineering credentials that stem from Softkinetic, Sony, Spectricity, and ams OSRAM. Its seasoned technical team has enabled the Belgian company to develop a way of bringing together spatial and contextual human data - with power-efficient, short latency response, multi-modal 3D perception and gaze tracking resulting. “Meeting with power and size constraints in wearable and robotic imaging systems comes with trade-offs. Typically, unwanted compromises will need to be made in relation to resolution,” the company’s CEO, Johannes Peeters, told EPDT. “Implementing low power and low latency while still maintaining high-quality imaging is, consequently, very challenging.” “With conventional imaging, the objective is to make things as bright and as...
