Update on the Empty Homes MPs Roundtable that Capital Letters and Crisis organised yesterday. It was really positive, we had Labour Party (UK), Liberal Democrats and cross benchers, and they all agreed to look at what simple steps the group can suggest, to start getting the 265,000 empty homes in the UK back into use. One really interesting point brought up by Adam Hug is that it’s probably a lot more homes than that – because you have to register a home as empty and then you have to pay more council tax, and some unscrupulous owners, just don’t register or they lie about it. So, 265,000 homes (the size of Hull) is the smallest possible number, because they are the registered ones. Huge thanks to all the MPs and Peers who came along Paula Barker MP (Labour, Liverpool Wavertree) Jonathan Brash MP (Labour, Hartlepool) Harpreet Uppal MP (Labour, Huddersfield) Sian Berry MP (Green Party, Brighton Pavilion) Lord Richard Best (Crossbench) Baroness Kathryn Pinnock (Liberal Democrat) – Lib Dem Housing Spokesperson in the House of Lords Baroness Olly Grender (Liberal Democrat) Baroness Mary Watkins (Crossbench) Baroness Diana Warwick (Labour) With expert evidence from Sue Edmonds CEO Capital Letters Jasmine Amber Basran Head of Policy and Campaigns at Crisis Adam Hug representing the Local Government Association Adam Cliff from The Empty Homes Network Mia Briggs and Peter Naya from The Public Affairs Company #localgovernment #emptyhomes #ukhousing #ukproperty #politicalchange #socialchange #socialgood

A gloomy day in London, but not enough to dampen the spirits in spreading the message. Privileged to have the opportunity today, along with Capital Letters and Crisis, to discuss empty homes with a group of MPs and Peers. On the release of this years Council Taxbase and the national statistics, there’s never been a better time to give empty homes the focus and attention they require.

Why are there so many empty homes and what can be done about them? In Britain, there are estimated to be between 1.2m and 1.5m empty homes that could be brought back into circulation, housing families in temporary accommodation or providing the ideal option for first-time buyers. With the help of Adam Cliff from the Empty Homes Network and Chris Bailey from Action on Empty Homes. #RICSModus explores the problem of empty homes and the reasons why they aren’t being used: http://ms.spr.ly/6043WZhrh
