It’s National Careers Week, and we’re highlighting the diverse and exciting careers within the recycling industry! Meet Samantha Hunter CMgr MCMI, Export General Manager at EMR. Her journey started far from the docks, initially training as a firefighter before discovering her passion for the recycling industry. Now, she’s leading a team, coordinating massive shipments of sustainable materials, and playing a vital role in delivering high-quality recycled materials to customers worldwide. What's her advice to the next generation of recyclers? “I would never have thought that I could be responsible for loading huge ships for a recycling company when I left school hoping to become a firefighter… There are so many opportunities available at EMR that I’d recommend getting a job in a yard, discover what it is that excites you and then follow that.” #NationalCareersWeek #SustainableCareers #WomenInRecycling #CircularEconomy

EMR’s General Manager for Business Development, Bill Firth, had the incredible privilege of meeting HM The King at Buckingham Palace this week! It was an inspiring discussion around our efforts to reduce material extraction, recycle more, and produce low-carbon circular materials. We also talked about how important it is to maximise the value of existing materials and the role of designing for future reuse and recyclability. We look forward to turning these conversations into meaningful actions! #sustainability #recycling #circulareconomy

Roger Morton, EMR’s Managing Director for Technology and Innovation, has welcomed the recent appointment of Tim Moss CBE as Chief Executive of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), calling for a policy change to prevent the loss of around a million tonnes of steel each year. Roger Morton said: “EMR welcomes the appointment of Tim Moss CBE as Chief Executive of the DVLA, and we look forward to working with him, once he begins the role on 31st March. “We hope that eliminating the significant loophole in the DVLA system that leads to a loss of up to 1 million tonnes of end-of-life vehicles containing steel, aluminium and other valuable raw materials, is high on his priority list. “Vehicles moved into ‘Trade’ status can currently either be recycled without traceability in the UK or exported for ‘reuse’ in developing countries. This lost material is vital in supporting the UK’s industrial infrastructure, particularly the recently approved Electric Arc Furnace at Port Talbot, Wales, and we need to make sure it’s safely, compliantly and responsibly recycled by approved facilities - with full traceability. “ Closing this loophole will require both policy changes by the Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom and software investment at the DVLA. However, it will bring significant benefits for taxation and help retain valuable resources within the UK. “EMR stands ready to collaborate with Tim and the DVLA to strengthen to UK’s resource security and transform more materials from end-of-life vehicles into the valuable resources of tomorrow.”

EMR has been shortlisted for the Sustainability Award at this year's Decom Mission Awards due to our work with renewable assets and the considerable contribution this has made to the circular economy and accelerating the energy transition. Our team, working out of our dedicated turbine processing centre in Glasgow, should be so proud to be setting new standards, tackling difficult challenges - such as recycling blades - and playing a huge role in the UK's clean energy transition. No matter what happens on the 22nd May at the awards ceremony, the EMR team will keep progress turning and keep vital materials going around and around the circular economy. #DecomMissionAwards #WindTurbines #Renewables #WindTurbineRecycling #CircularEconomy

Badgers, butterflies, and wild flowers have become a regular feature at our Oldbury site since we launched our biodiversity project over a year ago, and we're thrilled to share an exciting update. Thanks to the support of the BBC’s conservation team, we’ve recently planted a variety of native trees and shrubs, to strengthen local ecosystems and create essential habitats for wildlife. Species such as Alder Buckthorn, Bird Cherry, Guelder Rose, Honeysuckle, Rowan and Wych Elm were planted by the EMR team last week, supporting local birds and pollinators; including the Brimstone butterfly and the protected White Letter Hairstreak butterfly. The planting is part of a larger £25,000 funding drive led by BBC’s conservation team and Birmingham & Black Country Wildlife Trust, aiming to restore more habitats across the region. #Rewilding #Biodiversity #Sustainability #Nature #BBCWildlife

The USS John F. Kennedy (CV 67) aircraft carrier has completed her final journey, arriving at our world-class facility in Brownsville, Texas. Named in honor of the 35th President of the United States, this iconic vessel served for 39 years, with tens of thousands of veterans calling her home. Now, the team at International Shipbreaking LLC will respectfully dismantle and recycle 97% of her 60,728 tons, preserving her legacy for generations to come. Stay tuned as we honor her history through sustainable recycling, and for a chance to own a piece of this extraordinary ship. #USNavy #USSMilitary #MetalRecycling #USHistory #MarineRecycling
