The marsh fritillary, one of the UK’s rarest butterflies, is making a remarkable comeback in Cumbria. Once declared extinct in the region, these beautiful butterflies have been rediscovered in Swindale Valley and near Shap, with populations soaring thanks to the careful efforts of Cumbria Connect and local land managers. In 2023, conservation teams found over 100 caterpillar webs—a promising leap forward for this delicate species, which depends entirely on devil’s-bit scabious to survive. Thoughtful grazing practices, wildflower management, and the dedication of local farmers have been pivotal in creating habitats where these butterflies can flourish. 🔗Find out more: https://lnkd.in/gMV7UxKX 📸 Lee Schofield, Mark Williamson

Restoring landscapes and seascapes for life
About us
Over many centuries, Europe’s landscapes and seascapes have become degraded. Ecosystems are fragmented, species have been lost, and the populations of birds, insects and mammals are greatly diminished. Europe needs to bring life back to its land and seas; we need to restore places where people can reconnect to nature and marvel at the natural world. Restoring nature at scale is one of the best ways of tackling the twin climate and biodiversity crises, as well as enhancing the wide range of other benefits that nature provides – including clean air and water, fertile soil, flood protection and human health and wellbeing. The Endangered Landscapes Programme supports partners to restore landscapes and seascapes across Europe for the benefit of nature and people, building a healthier and more hopeful future. The Endangered Landscapes Programme is funded by Arcadia and managed by the Cambridge Conservation Initiative.

🔥Fighting Fire with Nature🌿 While wildfires are a natural part of many ecosystems, #ClimateChange is increasing their severity and intensity. Several of the landscapes we support are in regions prone to fire, making it critical to address fire risks in their restoration plans. In our latest article, Dr Taylor Shaw explains how these projects are finding nature-based solutions to mitigate fire risks and build long-term resilience in their landscapes through innovative research and restoration interventions. 🌿Fieldnotes from future leaders This summer, the Centre for Landscape Regeneration's Future Leaders Programme gave emerging researchers hands-on experience in the Cairngorms Connect landscape. Through fieldnotes, soil science, and ecological challenges, seven project assistants dove into real-world conservation efforts in the Cairngorms and the Cambridgeshire Fens. From monitoring greenhouse gas emissions to measuring biodiversity, they gained invaluable insights, exploring how practical, nature-based solutions can transform our landscapes. Their experiences highlight the role of young scientists in shaping our approach to sustainable restoration. 🌍🌱 Explore their fieldnotes and snapshots of the Cairngorms in action 👇 https://lnkd.in/gtSmqWmE

🎓 Professional Placements: Where Theory Meets Practice in Conservation Leadership The Masters in Conservation Leadership at the University of Cambridge offers a unique Professional Placement component, where students work alongside experienced professionals at leading conservation organisations. From May to August, they tackle real-world conservation challenges, putting their leadership skills into practice. 👏 We're delighted to share that Kai H. (Class of 2023-24), recipient of the Robert Sansom Scholarship, has been awarded the MPhil Prize 2023-24 for Best Distinction-Level Dissertation. His innovative placement with Cambridge Conservation Initiative (CCI) Conservation Initiative evaluated how artist residencies influence community perspectives and conservation outcomes. Working with Endangered Landscapes & Seascapes Programme and the Arts, Science and Conservation Programme, Kai developed a groundbreaking framework to measure the impact of artist residencies in conservation projects. Through extensive stakeholder engagement across Europe, he uncovered valuable insights about art's role in conservation and community engagement. His creative approach included speculative workshops challenging artists to envision unlimited possibilities for conservation-focused art. This methodology revealed new perspectives on integrating environmental and community considerations into artistic practice. The significance of Kai's work has been recognized through his appointment as an ELSP Adviser. He is currently undertaking a consultancy with ELSP and ASCP, focusing on "Impact Evaluation of the Artist Residencies Programme," demonstrating how our programme creates pathways from academic excellence to professional impact. Apply now for 2024-25! Applications are open for the Masters in Conservation Leadership: https://lnkd.in/d2AvgUQd

🌍 93 Communities Benefiting from Ecosystem Restoration This Key Performance Indicator (KPI) tracks the positive impacts of our project actions on local communities since the onset of the Programme in 2019. These benefits include provisioning services like income from tourism and forest products, regulating services such as flood reduction and carbon storage, and cultural services like recreation and community engagement. By delivering these benefits, we’re helping to restore vital ecosystem services that support livelihoods and strengthen community resilience. This work directly contributes to Target 11 of the Global Biodiversity Framework, which seeks to restore and enhance nature’s contributions to people, including air and water regulation, pollination, and protection from natural disasters. We remain committed to working with our partners to continue delivering long-term positive outcomes for both nature and communities. 🌱 Find out more 👇 https://lnkd.in/gZNV78ac
