It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Which to us means reminding schools to switch off as much as they can at the end of term. Boilers should be in frost protection mode - the school doesn't need to be 18 degrees or more on Christmas Day. All electrical equipment should be switched off completely. Watch out for those sneaky things on timers that come on every Monday morning! This might also be a good opportunity to defrost fridges and freezers and consolidate where possible. This quick exercise could save your school hundreds, if not thousands of pounds in just two weeks! Last year, 28% of secondary schools spent more than £10,000 on energy during the Christmas holidays! Give your school a Christmas present by using one of our templates to create a holiday switch off list: https://lnkd.in/ef9tv6Nu
Energy Sparks
Non-profit Organizations
We provide an online energy management tool and education programme helping schools to fight climate change.
About us
Energy Sparks' vision is a sustainable future in which the school community is at the heart of measurable action to tackle climate change. We equip children and young people with knowledge, skills, and tools to take measurable action in their school and wider community to reduce carbon emissions. We enable school leaders, staff and communities to better understand and reduce their school’s energy consumption and introduce wider measures to reduce their carbon footprint. Energy Sparks provides an online school specific energy management tool and education programme designed to help schools reduce their electricity and gas usage through bespoke analysis of smart meter data. Energy Sparks highlights low-cost opportunities for energy saving. We provide online, email and text notifications of changes in energy consumption with recommended energy saving actions tailored for each school. Energy Sparks has over 100 energy-related activities which pupils can participate in through eco-teams or class-based learning. Schools gain points for completing activities which contribute to a scoreboard where children can compete with other schools providing extra motivation. Energy Sparks provides education workshops, assemblies, energy management mentoring, webinar training, newsletters and bespoke support to drive more engagement and impact. Most schools can achieve energy savings of around 10% in their first year of engagement, resulting in cost savings of between £2,500 to £6000 and 8 tonnes of CO2 based on an average 2 form entry primary school. Our most engaged schools have achieved savings of up to 30%, typically by addressing holiday use, weekend use and heating start times. Energy Sparks empowers pupils to develop environmental awareness, participate in leadership and collaborative opportunities, build communication and analytical skills, be motivated to take responsibility for their school, and develop positive responses to climate change.

It's #greencareers week! This week we have been reflecting on what it means to have a career in sustainability. At Energy Sparks, we're a small but growing team with a range of skills. Some of us have backgrounds working in schools, some have energy management and sustainability backgrounds, others are data analysts, web developers and project managers. But what we all agree is fantastic about working for Energy Sparks is that we get to use our education, skills and experience to protect the environment, take action on climate change and empower other people to do the same. Nicola Webb, our Senior Energy and Carbon Consultant has written a blog post about her career path and realising after 20 years that she has probably taken the careers advice she was given after all! https://lnkd.in/evK8SSfG And Rebecca Scutt, our Senior School Partnerships and Data Coordinator has created a video about her unusual career route from teaching assistant to Energy Sparks (via school trip booking and NHS careers advice!). https://lnkd.in/ejNqZWia

We've produced a brief impact overview for this academic year, showing savings made by Energy Sparks schools up to the end of June compared with last year. In total, we've estimated that our schools have saved over £7,000,000 and 8,500 tonnes CO2. And that's not including the summer holidays. Surprisingly large savings can be made by a really thorough switch off at the end of term.

We've seen record engagement with the Energy Sparks scoreboard this school year. Energy Sparks schools earn points every time they record their pupil or staff team's energy-saving activities. We'd love to offer more prizes to celebrate our top-scoring schools. Could your business sponsor a scoreboard prize of £500 to reward more winners and inspire more school energy-saving activity? This year's scoreboard competition ends on 30 June, so looking for more sponsors before then. Prizes are to be used for a sustainability project of the school's choice.
