"Why would teaching a student 'onomatopoeia' be more imperative than a 'determiner'?" This got me thinking in an excellent webinar on Grammar with Englicious this week. I learnt of the danger of proxy definitions and balanced my own views on the neo-traditionalist-progressive debate on teaching grammar in secondary schools. Having been progressive over the first couple of years of my teaching, I begin to open my eyes to the need for a knowledge-rich curricula that holds students accountable for their grammar and prepares them to be critical and fine-tuned for the demanding working world of today. In the run up to the National Curriculum Review, it is important, particularly as English teachers, that we have access to training and dialogue around grammar precisely as Luke P. provides.

'From Old English to World Englishes', organised as part of the Being Human Festival 2024, invites students to explore varieties of English across time and throughout the English-speaking world. Activities will include comparisons of recipes in different varieties of English; the opportunity to solve Old English word puzzles; and the creation of bunting celebrating "Your English". This workshop will introduce students to new words and old words, word histories and word usage, while encouraging them to think about how their own use of the English language fits into this broader historical context. More information can be found on the Being Human Festival website. The workshop will take place on Wednesday 13th November 2024 from 9.30am in 1hr30 slots at Dr Johnson’s House, just off Fleet Street (a museum dedicated to the famous lexicographer). Free travel is available from TFL: https://lnkd.in/eJiGyJYB
