We break down Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) 👇 BOD is a measure of the amount of oxygen required to break down organic matter from water in the process of decomposition by aerobic bacteria (bacteria that require oxygen to respire). It is important to monitor water quality, as any changes will affect aquatic life. An increased BOD will put stresses on aquatic organisms. The higher the BOD, the faster oxygen is depleted in the stream. This means less oxygen is available for forms of aquatic life. Aquatic organisms begin to suffocate and die. Head of Innovation Dr Sonja Ostojin presented CENTAUR® at WIN Water's digital meeting "Applications of Sponge City Concepts in Europe". Future Living & Space, a Swedish publication, comments, "Dr Sonja Ostojin from EMS talked about how the intelligent system CENTAUR® can reduce the risk of flooding in a community's stormwater drainage system. The system reads the current situation in the sewage system and uses AI to decide whether the water should be held back or released. The system can be controlled locally to optimise capacity. CENTAUR® is used in the existing infrastructure but adds, for example, level sensors, monitors and control stations, but also barriers that provide opportunities to shut off flows."
