It's being reported that only two of the top 45 highest-grossing mobile games on the Google Play store are conforming to Advertising Standards Authority rules on advertising, which compels developers to disclose if their games contain loot boxes. This is a new development on a story which returns to the news cycle around this time each year, as parents prepare to buy games for their children at Christmas, potentially without realising that they contain loot boxes, which are known to include gambling-like mechanisms and 'risk and reward' elements that aren't covered by traditional gambling bans for under 18s. It's a topic that we covered via The Gambling Harm Podcast this time last year, shortly before our re-brand, so the messaging and advice we shared then remains pertinent now, especially if you're a parent or guardian buying this kind of game for a child for the first time this year. EPIC consultant and former boxer Elizabeth Thielen, LPC, PCGC features in one of the most in-depth articles you'll read this year on the current state of play with sports wagering and other forms of gambling in the US. She spoke to Rolling Stone to provide her lived experience of problem gambling earlier in life - and details of how she now helps to prevent harm for others - as context alongside the many other intriguing contributors who make a living from gambling. Sit down with a good drink or a selection of snacks and discover her contribution to this remarkably-detailed feature... The day has finally arrived when details of the long promised #gambling statutory levy in the UK are provided. There are many supporters, and many opponents, of the levy and the devil will be in the detail over the next few months. EPIC Global Solutions have played a full part in consulting on the levy with the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, adding ‘genuinely balanced views’ on what has become a politically polarised issue. I offer 5 main views on what is an important day: 1. We should never forget that the main people that matter are those who need the services. We are already seeing organisations claim ‘victory’ in the last few hours. The only thing that matters should be that gambling harm is prevented in the first place, and then treated effectively for the small percentage (but significant number) of people who do suffer issues. 2. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport Fiona Twycross (Baroness Twycross) have got the splits right for the levy at 50% treatment, 30% prevention and 20% research. This is what we have advocated for in discussions but there are important sidenotes to each. 3. Gambling problems are not one size fits all and neither should treatment be. The NHS are probably the right commissioner, but how they manage the incredibly important wider ecosystem and provide choices of treatment & aftercare that will be genuinely life saving or not. There are some amazing treatment options out there such as Gordon Moody the NGSN and some incredible peer support and aftercare organisations such as Betknowmore UK and EPIC Restart Foundation who all should be supported to provide choice and diversity of options. 4. Research must be genuinely impartial and fit for purpose. This area has got murky in the last 5 years with funding from conflicted sources and hardly ever truly impartial from the outside looking in. UK Research and Innovation will be under intense scrutiny. Again, it must be people first motivated and not pro or anti gambling led. 5. Then there’s prevention. The bit that’s still not decided on fully at this point other than it warrants 30% of the levy. As an organisation that has helped lead this area since 2013, and the largest gambling lived experience employer globally, EPIC have fed their thoughts comprensively on this area and have felt listened to. However, we are no nearer knowing who is the commissioner (right that this isn’t NHS England) and timescales. Certainty needs to be brought into this area as soon as possible so that the great organisations on the Gambling Commission approved RET list can continue their life changing work. This cannot be about anti-gambling campaigning. The public & political scrutiny on the levy will be enormous going forward and hopefully the points above will be prominent to ensure that this levy doesn’t have unintended consequences and actually do more harm than good.

13 years ago since I placed my last bet. No long post this year, other than to thank everyone who has been on all or parts of this journey with me, both professionally & personally, and to reiterate two points: Addiction shouldn’t define you. I was a #gambling addict for at least a decade but I’ve had nearly 4x that long in life where I haven’t been one and hope to have a few more ahead. Decide what you want to do, and who you want to be, in life and go and get it. Dont live your life looking in the rear view mirror.

The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) has led the way in presenting a sponsorship code to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, confirming the sport's commitment to safe and sustainable promotion of gambling activity, in response to the government's white paper in April 2023. Greg Swift, director of communications and corporate affairs at the BHA, joined us on a recent webinar to discuss professional sport's relationship with gambling.
