We hosted our Annual Showcase 2024 at the Edinburgh Futures Institute last week, bringing together innovative companies from our portfolio, angel investors, and industry leaders for an evening of inspiration and collaboration. The evening was an opportunity to celebrate the hard work, growth, and success of our investee companies while providing a platform to share their groundbreaking achievements: • QikServe Dan Rogers highlighted how their digital solutions are transforming the hospitality industry, enhancing the customer journey, and streamlining services for businesses and discussed the recent acquisition by Access group. • Amiqus – Callum Murray showcased their secure digital ID verification technology, fostering trust and efficiency across sectors. • MiAlgae Douglas Martin shared their sustainability-focused innovation, converting algae into eco-friendly animal feed for a greener future. • MI:RNA Diagnostics- Eve Hanks presented advancements in RNA technology, improving diagnostics and treatments for critical health conditions. • ULEMCo Ltd Amanda Lyne explained Ulemco's pioneering role in the hydrogen fuel space, driving progress toward clean energy solutions. We were also delighted to hear from Paul Funnell of Scottish Enterprise, our longstanding co-investment partners, who shared valuable insights into the support available to Scotland's growing businesses. The evening concluded with an engaging Q&A, with all the speakers, creating thought-provoking discussions among attendees. Our event showcased the exceptional quality of Equity Gap’s portfolio companies and was a great reminder of the incredible work and positive impact they’re having in their respective sectors. We’re delighted to be on board on their journeys as they continue to scale and create lasting change. Many thanks to Wright, Johnston & Mackenzie LLP for their ongoing legal support and for kindly sponsoring the event. #EquityGap #AngelInvestors #BusinessGrowth #Innovation #Sustainability #TechInnovation #EdinburghFutures #AnnualShowcase #InvestmentOpportunities #scaleup #Entrepreneurship #Funding #PrivateEquity

An Edinburgh-based syndicate at the forefront of angel investment in Scotland.
About us
Established in 2010 to help match private investors with young entrepreneurial companies looking for early-stage business funding, Equity Gap is an Edinburgh-based business angel syndicate with 150 active members. Equity Gap's current membership includes many captains of industry, business leaders, academics and entrepreneurs from Scotland and beyond, a number of whom are ex-pats or former residents, all eager to support early stage companies in Scotland. Those young entrepreneurial businesses are often pre-revenue, but with a validated product or service that has undergone a pre-investment commercialisation process. Ideally the investment should be eligible for SEIS/EIS advance assurance and preferably the business should be based in Scotland or willing to relocate. Equity Gap typically invests a minimum of £100,000 and maximum of £500,000 at initial or seed investment stage, with additional match funding from Scottish Enterprise. However, it regularly coinvests alongside other business angel syndicates, SE, VCs and the Scottish National Investment Bank to make more sizeable investments into scale-up opportunities across a wide range of sectors in Scotland. Winners of the UKBAA's 'Most Active Investor in the Regions' award in 2019, Equity Gap members have invested in over 40 companies, leveraging more than £125m in total investment into our growing portfolio.

Inventor of QR code order and pay. Regional Finalist Entrepreneur Of The Year 2022 UK #EOYUK. Bringing Digital Self-service and Engagement to the Hospitality Sector
Today marks a new chapter at QikServe as we join forces with The Access Group. 13 years ago, struggling to get served in a restaurant with two young children, I came up with the idea of using a QR code to order and pay. I was joined by my awesome co-founder Ronnie Forbes with the mission to disrupt the hospitality space. We assembled the best team in the world and set about doing just that. We set our sights on being an international hospitality tech business from the outset and we now power digital ordering in over 8,000 locations, in 44 countries. There are probably a thousand people I need to thank so to make it easy and I will put them into groups. My family, who has put up with/supported my obsession. Our investor who backed us (Equity Gap, Par Equity, Maven Capital Partners and more). Our partners along the way like Oracle Restaurants, Zonal and FreedomPay to name a few. Our advisors MBM Commercial LLP and Akash Sahai, JD, MBA. Our customers who have believed in us and supported the business, some for over 10 years. However, the biggest thank-you must go to the team, past and present. You are the ones that turned up, believed big, delivered and made all this possible. I will be forever grateful, and I can’t wait to go on this next part of our journey with you. To our new Access colleagues…Let’s do this!! https://lnkd.in/eUB7KdJC

Congratulations to Alan Mahon and all the team at Equity Gap investee company Brewgooder on brewing the world's first Fairtrade Certified beer. Its Fairtrade Fonio Session IPA is now available in Co-op, Sainsbury's and Waitrose stores across the UK. #scaleups #angelinvesting #fairtrade #beer
!FAIRTRADE UP YOUR BEER! Ethical shoppers now have the opportunity to choose a Fairtrade Certified option in the beer aisle with our Fonio Session IPA. Over the past six months our team have worked tirelessly with our partners to build a Fairtrade supply chain for our fonio grain from scratch, ensuring the West African farming communities growing this incredible super grain get paid a fair price for what goes into our beer. Knowing the biggest waves are made together, we’re also launching ‘Open Grain’ (cheers Tony’s 😇) meaning the supply chain can be accessed by all other breweries and businesses looking to source fonio grain for themselves. A HUGE shoutout to the teams at Co-op, Sainsbury's and Waitrose & Partners who backed us on this project from the beginning... meaning our 4-packs of our Fairtrade Fonio Session IPA are now available UK wide! There's sooo much more to tell you in the coming days about the cool things this beer is doing, and the remarkable people who made it happen, but in the meantime go get some... and Fairtrade up your beer 🍻✌🏻

As part of a project funded by Scottish Enterprise, portfolio company MiAlgae has designed smaller versions of its bioreactors. Still in trial phase, scaling its bioreactors will broaden the opportunities for MiAlgae as the company continues to grow and develop its market. A great commitment to ongoing innovation. #AngelInvesting #Commercialisation #BioTech
We don’t agree “what happens in the lab should stay in the lab” because we’re passionate about successfully scaling our #biotech innovations to commercialisation. As part of a recent Scottish Enterprise funded project, we designed Mini-Me 10L bioreactors in the image of our commercial scale 30kL bioreactors. Take away message: Hot results in the wee MiAlgae bioreactors = hot results at scale. Here’s Aimee getting the wee guys ready for the next product optimisation trial! #commericalisation #optimisation #lab #biotechnology #scaleup #omega3 #algae #biotech for good
