Hydrogen-based direct reduction (H-DRI) technology is quickly gathering pace in Europe, with multiple announcements of new plants. Other steel producers, particularly outside Europe, are considering retrofitting their integrated steel mills with carbon capture and storage (CCS) to enable use of existing equipment. However, not all new steel-making technologies will deliver deep emissions cuts, and while the effective carbon price paid by steel producers remains relatively low, all of these technologies will come at an additional cost. ERM research for the IEAGHG R&D Programme profiling the lifecycle costs and emissions of emerging lower carbon steel technology pathways within the EU reveals these three trends. Asian Pacific countries must urgently scale up a robust and resilient wind energy supply chain to meet their renewables targets. Currently, the region over relies on production in China and India and its supply chain is not prepared to deliver wind energy projects at the scale needed. The good news: the APAC region has a wealth of capabilities within existing companies that can be scaled up or pivoted to the wind industry. With a collaborative, cross-border approach, the APAC supply chain could grow to meet increased regional and global demands while becoming more competitive, diversified, and resilient. These are the findings from a new report co-authored by ERM and Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), ‘Building the Asia Pacific Wind Supply Chain for a 1.5°C World’. Through desktop research, local GWEC and ERM expert knowledge, and more than 100 consultations with APAC industry experts, we assessed and mapped APAC’s existing supply chain capabilities and their expected growth according to recent GWEC market forecasts. The report names four key challenges facing supply chains and seven actions that companies and governments can take to bolster them. With more than 1,360 GW of offshore wind currently in development globally, countries around the world are betting on offshore wind energy to help decarbonize both their electricity supply and industrial sectors. Integrating this rapidly increasing share of renewables into the onshore energy system requires new ways to balance energy supply and demand. To address the challenge of integrating offshore power, governments are starting to build criteria into offshore wind tenders, requiring project developers to provide system integration solutions. 🌍 The 2024 HFS Research Horizons report for Sustainability Services is live! Congratulations to Nandini Tare, Mayank Madhur, and Anushka Mukherjee for an incredible study that I was allowed to jump into during the closing stages after rejoining the team. 🌐 The sustainability spheres of influence remain vast for any ambitious consulting, technology, engineering, IT, or business services firm—as vast as when we launched our first Sustainability Services market analysis two years ago: https://lnkd.in/eg-gEpYA 🎇 Companies in every industry need to move quickly. Services firms can be there alongside them—having become intertwined throughout their organizations. 🌟 Services firms should come together with their most ambitious clients and partners who also want to tap into those spheres of influence. They can be part of a critical mass—architects of the positive tipping points of sustainability needs. They can further embed sustainability in their services regardless of client demand and play the role the global context calls for. In the 2️⃣0️⃣2️⃣4️⃣ Horizons report, we analyze the capabilities of 25 sustainability services providers. This report includes detailed profiles, outlining their HFS Horizons placement, key metrics, and their strengths and development opportunities across the three Horizons you can see below. 📗 You can find the full report here: https://lnkd.in/eppfJEeT 😊 Do reach out to us all with any questions or thoughts! 🎉 Congratulations to all 25 participants who are continuing to tap into their sustainability spheres of influence with clients and partners. There’s so much more for us all to do. I can't wait to keep maximizing those spheres going forward throughout the HFS ecosystem.
