Experienced detectives responsible for locking up a man after the largest child sexual abuse investigation in #Essex are urging other young victims to come forward. “Please report sexual abuse and exploitation when you are ready,” they say. “We will listen to you and we will investigate.” The online predator was subsequently jailed for 21 years after admitting causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, blackmail and numerous similar offences and officers involved in the investigation have been commended by our Chief Constable, Ben-Julian Harrington. Detective Sergeant Ben Rushmere says: “As this case proved, it can take victims of physical and online sexual abuse years to come to terms with what they have experienced but I want to reassure anyone reading this that, when you are ready, we are here, so please come forward and report it.” The national #WhenYouAreReady campaign features the voices of victims and survivors who have experienced child sexual abuse and exploitation, online and through physical contact. And it encourages them to seek support if, and when, they feel it’s right for them. Just one initial report about the man’s offending led to the team positively identifying 236 of his victims. We want to keep knives and blades out of the wrong hands, so we ask stores selling them to sign up to our Responsible Retailer scheme. Staff pledge to store and display knives and other bladed items safely and securely and to operate a strict ‘Challenge 25’ age verification policy. Our officers were at rail, Tube and bus stations across #Essex yesterday, speaking to staff from Greater Anglia, c2c and Transport for London about how to recognise and report the signs of child exploitation and vulnerability. They also spoke to passengers and local bus & taxi drivers, too. Stuart Smith, our Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation Lead, says: “Child exploitation is so damaging to victims and we want to raise awareness of this appalling criminal activity. “Children and young people often travel on trains, buses and taxis on their own but, unfortunately, this can leave them vulnerable to abusers who want to exploit them sexually or for criminal purposes.” David Archibald, Essex Safeguarding Children Board Independent Chair, adds: “Child exploitation is a horrendous crime and one we can all play a part in helping to stop. The Essex Multi-Agency Approach to Fraud (MAAF) continues to work together to help stop criminals from defrauding our communities. Staff based within Maldon and District Community Volunteers Service will undergo training from the Essex Police Prevent and Protect Team in the skills to identify and prevent cybercrime plus how to teach others. This innovative approach aims to reduce cybercrime in our communities by building a network across Essex to increase our resilience.
