Updates

  • Recently, Leigh Holt from etc Design ltd attended the second lecture in the RIBA Shropshire Society of Architects autumn lecture series in Shrewsbury. The lecture, 'Learning from Others,' featured guest speaker Mark Tuff. It explored a collaborative approach to architecture, reflecting on how knowledge exchange and cross-disciplinary influences shape innovative and sustainable designs. “I think we all learnt something. An interesting talk by Mark Tuff of Sergison Bates Architects on some of their award-winning projects and how working together in collaboration has produced some amazing pieces of work.” - Leigh Holt. The next event is planned for the end of the month and we hope to follow with another update!  SERGISON BATES ARCHITECTS LLP RIBA West Midlands  #LearningFromOthers #DesignInspiration #ArchitecturalLecture

  • Earlier this month Leigh Holt from etc Design ltd had the pleasure of presenting to first-year architecture students at the University of Wolverhampton at their Welcome Week. Alongside Daniel Stanyard (regional engagement partner, RIBA West Midlands ), Leigh delivered an introduction to RIBA and how to become a student member and get involved in the RIBA Future Architects Student Mentoring Programme for 2024/25. It was also an excellent opportunity for Leigh as the local RIBA branch chairman to introduce the Wolverhampton & District Society of Architects (WDSA), and himself as a local architect and practice owner of etc Design Ltd. During the session, students were encouraged to elect a student representative and to attend upcoming WDSA social events in the run-up to Christmas. It was excellent to see so many students on the architecture course at the Welcome Week and we wish them all well on the start of their architectural journey!   We offer our thanks to Olive White, architect and programme leader at WLVArchitecture (University of Wolverhampton) , for the invitation. #Architects #RIBA #FutureArchitects

  • Last week, Leigh Holt from etc Design attended the West Midlands Historic Buildings Trust (WMHBT)  Conference: Repurposing Churches. The event was held in the beautiful Top Church (St Thomas and St Luke) in Dudley—a building that also featured in the final talk. The conference was a useful opportunity to learn more about adapting and the successful reuse of ecclesiastical buildings. A series of engaging talks and case studies illustrated both the potential of these spaces and also the unique challenges of regeneration and the maintenance of church buildings—critical aspects in preserving these architectural treasures. The sessions were interspersed by coffee breaks and a magnificent lunchtime spread of food —a useful opportunity to discuss the topics presented and form new connections.  Thank you to @wmhistoricbuildingstrust for hosting. #Architects #RepurposingChurches #restoration

  • Behind the scenes at Grand Designs Live... The show was well attended on Saturday, with a busy 'Ask An Expert' stand where visitors had the opportunity to book time with Leigh Holt from etc Design ltd .  Among the enquiries were a number from new homeowners. Here are some of the questions Leigh answered: ✍️How to select an architect ⌚When should the design process start 📃Is permitted development or planning approval required 🏠He also advised on construction methods, timescales and likely budget required. The projects discussed were varied and interesting, covering everything from single and two-storey extensions to new builds and historically listed homes in Green Belt and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs). Leigh was also amazed at the distance some visitors had travelled. He took queries from homeowners, not just in Birmingham and the surrounding area, but also Pembrokeshire, Milton Keynes, Nottingham, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Leamington Spa, central London, Worcester, Southampton and Hampshire. He even spoke to a housing developer from Senegal, West Africa! As well as advice, Leigh had the pleasure of sharing some of our completed projects and what a successful project process looks like. Did you attend the show - what were your highlights?  #ArchitecturalServices #AskAnExpert #Architect #GrandDesignsLive Grand Designs Portfolio

  • A shining star on Church Street, Bishop's Castle. etc Design ltd provided architectural services for the conversion of the original, Stars Newsagents, on Church Street, Bishops Castle in Shropshire. PROJECT BACKGROUND The building was purchased by Bishops Castle Community Land Trust (BCCLT), whose main purpose is to provide affordable housing for local people. When the BCCLT acquired it, the building was in a very poor state but the programme of conversion has resulted in two flats (now occupied) and a community space intended for pop-up shops, art displays and more. The build was complicated and took roughly three years to complete due to interruptions by COVID-19, but the space is now fully operational. THE OPENING This month, Mike Cash attended its opening and saw the transformation in all its glory. The community space featured art by Mark Zenick, who donated his original 'Brothers and Sisters' portraits to BCCLT. The Artwork will remain on permanent display for the public to visit and view.
