In his latest piece, our Visiting Senior Fellow Philippe Legrain argues that Europe urgently needs to rearm, as Russia’s threat is intensifying under US President Trump's administration and deterrence remains cheaper than war. But how can Europe finance military investment when economies are weak, public finances are stretched, and many voters are loath to accept cuts to other government spending? Philippe Legrain identifies at least three options for mitigating these factors: exclude defense investments from fiscal rules, borrow collectively for defense, expand European Investment Bank lending for military spending. 🔗 Read more: https://lnkd.in/dmPSyXT6 To stay up to date with the latest stories from the European Institute, visit lse.ac.uk/ei/news.

“Far-right ideas of breakdown and disruption prosper when the left gives up on more demanding visions of the future.” In his recent op-ed for The Guardian, our Professor in Politics Jonathan White argues that today’s far right’s strength in North America, Europe, and beyond comes not from nostalgia but from a radical vision of the future. Meanwhile, the centre-left's technocratic approach to the future is overly focused on targets rather than change. 🔗 Read more: https://lnkd.in/gb43SW7F To stay up to date with the latest stories from the European Institute, visit lse.ac.uk/ei/news.

How do national institutions, especially parliaments shape divisive discourses, and what can be done to advance transitional justice policymaking in the Balkans?🧑⚖️ 💭 Professor Denisa Kostovicova, Dr Ivor Sokolic, and Dr Lanabi L. have co-authored a new policy paper which draws on their Justice Interactions and Peacebuilding (JUSTINT) research and has been featured in the latest publication of the “Aspen Western Balkans Initiative: Engagement for Progress and Stability” project implemented by the Aspen Institute Germany. The publication resulted from a conference held by the Aspen Institute in October last year in Sarajevo in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina and was recently featured by Deutsche Welle. Their paper highlights that the EU’s shift away from prioritising reconciliation has slowed progress, while education and parliamentary discourse continue to reinforce ethnic divides. 🔗 Read the full publication: https://lnkd.in/eXcZ_qYv To stay up to date with the latest stories from the European Institute, visit lse.ac.uk/ei/news.

“Why are we discussing European defence? Because the situation has fundamentally changed.” This is how Klaus Welle, our Visiting Professor in Practice and former Secretary-General of the European Parliament (2009–2022), opened his speech at last week’s event, “The Urgency of Now: What Can and Should We Do to Bolster European Security and Defence?” Joined by political scientist, author, and academic Richard Rose, they explored the challenges Europe must navigate to strengthen its own security and defence in an increasingly unstable world. 🎥Watch the full event on our YouTube channel: https://lnkd.in/ebAJMreZ
