In the midst of the Cold War, the establishment of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) serves as an example of how states can come together to combat existential risk, even in difficult international circumstances. For the ELN's New European Voices on Existential Risk (NEVER) podcast "Ok, Doomer!", ELN Policy and Impact Director, Jane Kinninmont interviewed Henry A. Kissinger Center for Global Affairs Director and Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) Professor Francis J. Gavin on how this cornerstone of the global non-proliferation regime came about. Building better security for wider Europe
About us
The European Leadership Network exists to build better mutual security in wider Europe – from Lisbon to Vladivostok. It was formed by pragmatic people in pursuit of this vision. They believed that a network of experienced public figures committed to practical, cooperative solutions to common existential security problems could make as much of a difference as national governments. Step by step they are being proved right. The ELN’s active networks of former and emerging European political, military, business and diplomatic leaders from across the continent, its expert team’s high-quality research, publications and events, and its institutional partnerships across Europe, North America, Latin America and the Asia-Pacific region give it security policy impact like no other non-governmental organisation. Inspired by the US President’s 2009 call in Prague for progressive multilateral nuclear disarmament, the scope of action quickly widened to all the gravest threats on a continent that in the 20th century was the bloodiest on the planet – the loss of cohesion between states, peoples and institutions; the dangers of unintended war; the risks from new military technologies; the absence of dialogue and arms control. The ELN’s members and its multinational team of experts, currently headquartered in London, work collectively and individually alongside governments to achieve practical, positive progress towards better security. The organisation is independent, non-partisan and conceives of Europe in its widest sense, to include not only the EU but Russia, Turkey, Ukraine, and the rest of our diverse, unstable region.

There is uncertainty under what political circumstances states parties will convene for the 11th RevCon in 2026. As the nuclear disarmament acquis is currently threatened from many directions, this new ELN policy brief considers what steps states parties may take to protect the NPT under different scenarios – a dark sky, a grey sky, and a blue sky. It was a pleasure to support the European Leadership Network (ELN) and Auswärtiges Amt (Federal Foreign Office) Germany's workshop through the application of our AI technology and expertise. To support this important work, Adarga designed a tool to enhance decision-makers’ understanding of risks pertaining to nuclear scenarios and how they could de-risk potential escalatory action. This draws on our proven and in-service generative AI and natural language processing (NLP) technology. It serves as yet another example of our rapid AI innovation services Read the full event summary below: https://lnkd.in/e86SFdy8 More to follow. #AI #machinelearning #tech #innovation

Today, the Japanese organisation #NihonHidankyo will receive the 2024 #NobelPeacePrize. In a new ELN Commentary, new ELN Policy Fellow Jana Baldus, and Caroline Fehl, Interim Professor of International Politics at Helmut-Schmidt-Universität/Universität der Bundeswehr Hamburg and Senior Research Fellow at PRIF Peace Research Institute Frankfurt, argue that in the spirit of nuclear justice, NPT member states should address the legacy of nuclear weapons. They acknowledge that the NPT currently remains largely silent on the humanitarian and environmental consequences of nuclear weapons. Still, they argue that NPT members can do more to further nuclear justice and that doing so is in their own best interest. Read the full commentary below ⤵️ https://lnkd.in/gZpH-ii5

Following the UN Committee on Disarmament and International Security’s call to ascertain the views of Member States on the establishment of a Group of Scientific and Technical Experts (GSTE) on Nuclear Disarmament Verification (NDV), ELN Senior Network member Michael Biontino argues that NDV, beyond its technical aspects, is an essential political element of nuclear disarmament since it builds the trust needed for future agreements. In the commentary, he outlines the various ways that NDV can advance the political processes necessary for effective disarmament. Read the full commentary below ⤵️ https://lnkd.in/gWx4ZiQn
