About us
ELF is a patient-driven organisation that works internationally to bring patients and the public together with healthcare professionals to improve lung health and advance diagnosis, treatment and care. Founded in 2000, ELF works in partnership with the European Respiratory Society (ERS) to develop the union between lung health professionals and patients. Based in Sheffield (UK) and Brussels (Belgium) ELF has grown and developed a core team of specialists and a network of individual patients and patient organisations. ELF works with people from all over the world, including our volunteer patient network of more than 350 people and our patient organisation network with more than 200 respiratory organisations in Europe; working together with people living with more than 40 different lung conditions. Our ethos is openness, inclusiveness and collaboration. We believe in working together to improve lung health.

I am honoured to have the opportunity to virtually participate in the upcoming conference 'Inspiring changes - innovations and support for patients with respiratory diseases' that will take place in Lviv, Ukraine, on Sunday, 15 December. I want to express my solidarity to Ukrainian respiratory patients during these challenging times. Since the beginning of the war, ELF has been sharing information to help patients with lung conditions in any way possible and to foster stronger connections with Ukraine. I want to thank Oksana Kulish, whose unrelentless commitment to ELF has made a remarkable impact. Among other achievements, she has managed to introduce the Ukrainian language to the European Patient Ambassador Programme (EPAP), a free, online, self-learning programme that introduces patients and carers to some of the basic skills and knowledge needed to represent yourself and others successfully. Together, let’s continue to support and empower respiratory patients across Europe and beyond. - Dimitris Kontopidis, ELF Chair #LungHealth #PatientAdvocacy

As we enter another period of increased coughs, colds and infections, it’s a good time to reflect on the importance of taking care of ourselves and each other. Places like schools, hospitals, offices and other crowded spots with poor ventilation can make it easier for illnesses to spread, especially for those of us with lung conditions or weaker immune systems. To help protect each other, let’s keep a few simple but effective habits in mind. Washing or sanitising our hands regularly is one of the best ways to stop germs from spreading. When we can, opening windows or getting some fresh air can help clear out germs and lower the chance of airborne infections. And if we’re feeling unwell, staying home is the best way to avoid passing anything on to others. Remember! Taking care of ourselves helps us fight off infections. Eating well, staying active, getting enough sleep and managing stress all boost our immune system, making us stronger and more able to handle tough times. Let’s support one another — it makes a big difference for everyone! - Dimitris Kontopidis, ELF Chair #LungHealth #PatientAdvocacy
