Congratulations to the Airport Regions Council on its 30th anniversary as the voice of regional and local authorities hosting airports. 👏 We were pleased to join their celebrations today in Brussels, which brought together diverse stakeholders who contribute to the #RegionalAviation industry. ERA Director General Montserrat Barriga Andrés highlighted the economic, social and environmental value of regional aviation. Bottom line: Europe needs more effective tools to improve regional connectivity. Let’s dive in. How much value do regional airlines add? 📈 👉 Regional airlines are truly unique. Besides employing people, providing essential connections and being the first to decarbonise, they also act as multipliers. Regional airlines ensure that local economies as well as key industries such as tourism thrive. For instance, if regional airlines employ 24,000 people, then the number of jobs they enable in the tourism industry is nearly 300,000. How does it work in practice, for both airlines and people? 🤲 👉 Often, regional airlines operate public service obligation (PSO) routes, where airlines partner with public authorities which finance certain routes providing essential connectivity to many European citizens. This includes access to medical care, education and ensuring that local SMEs are connected to the economy. How can Europe improve its regional connectivity? 🛩️ 🌴 👉 By revising the current PSO framework to allow greater flexibility to operators. 👉By establishing a new start-up aid scheme under the 2014 Aviation Guidelines. There are current ‘thin’ routes that do not fall under the scope of PSOs but have lots of untapped potential. #ThinkRegional

It has been a pleasure to participate at this year's CAPA - Centre for Aviation Airline Leaders Summit in Belgrade and speaking about airline business models. When lines between different airline models blur and and airlines are borrowing elements from each other, service offerings become commoditised and all airlines want to march down the curve in costs and complexities, differentiation is crucial. But it comes at a cost. Jiří Marek said this morning at the conference that the two most important elements to protect are their people and their brand. I 100% subscribe to that. Indeed I flew with Air Serbia and I had a proper memorable 'Serbian' experience and that is a very important part of the air travel service to many passengers (such as me). #CAPASummit
Key takeaways from our business models panel. European Regions Airline Association, Director General, Montserrat Barriga Andrés: The business model is more of an internal tag that we use in our industry". IndiGo (InterGlobe Aviation Ltd), Vice President of Strategy, Neha Narain: "It’s very difficult to not have a cost-conscious business approach". TUI, CEO, Marco Ciomperlik: "There is a shift currently towards leisure… as a service carrier we are moving in that direction". VietJet Air, Vice President, Jay L Lingeswara: "We always keep our prices 15 to 20% lower than direct competitors on the same routes".

As COP29 draws to a close, the urgent need for combined efforts among stakeholders to support the drive to net zero aviation by 2050 is clear. ERA, along with our #Destination2050 partners, has sent an open letter to the EU institutions and Member States calling for an Industrial Strategy to support aviation's decarbonisation with policies and financing that will ultimately benefit European competitiveness. 📰 Read our press release and the open letter: https://lnkd.in/gtQ3tNy

Last week, I had the opportunity to represent the European Regions Airline Association (ERA) at the EUROCONTROL Airport Operations Team (AOT) Meeting in Istanbul—marking ERA's first participation in these interesting discussions ✨. It was great to engage in conversations alongside major airports like Heathrow, Gatwick, and Istanbul, among others. While the challenges faced by large hubs often take centre stage, it’s crucial to recognise the vital role #RegionalAirports play in #Connectivity, #EconomicGrowth, and the #Sustainability of the aviation sector 🛫. Attending these meetings not only allows us to learn from the experiences of larger airports but also ensures that the unique needs of our regional members are heard and addressed. Our goal is to highlight the importance of #ThinkingRegional, advocating for the operational and strategic priorities that matter most to our members. A big thank you to EUROCONTROL and all the participants for welcoming ERA into these insightful discussions. We look forward to continuing to collaborate as part of the wider airport community, working together to improve the future of aviation for everyone 🌍🤝. #ThinkRegional #RegionalAviation #RegionalAirportsMatter #AOT28

ERA member Binter has added a further two Embraer E195-E2s to its fleet, which has now grown to 40 aircraft. The aircraft have been named Vigo and the Balearic Islands, in a nod to the national destinations Binter inaugurated in 2018, marking a turning point in connectivity for the Canary Islands. https://lnkd.in/eUjsgw_J
