Fairness Matters: A Tale of Two Companies As professionals, we all understand that businesses have policies in place to ensure smooth operations. However, policies should be more than just rules that protect the company—they should also reflect fairness and appreciation for employees’ contributions. I recently experienced two contrasting approaches: At one company, I dedicated 11.5 months of my effort during their financial year and had been with them for over 18 months. However, when I left due to redundancy, I was denied a bonus because of “company policy.” In contrast, my new employer, Eyeful Presentations demonstrated a different kind of leadership. Despite only being with them for 4 months when their financial year ended, they recognized my contributions and awarded me a bonus for those months. This experience has taught me a valuable lesson: a company’s policies reflect its values. When policies are rooted in fairness and employee appreciation, they create a culture of trust, loyalty, and motivation. Fairness isn’t just the right thing to do—it’s also good business. When companies value their employees, they build teams that feel empowered to go the extra mile. To employers: Take a moment to reflect.
