The UK government set out new guidance last week for its procurement rules, which come into force on Monday. It says suppliers should actively work to tackle bribery, corruption and fraud, as well as comply with their tax obligations. What this looks like in practice will ultimately determine whether there is any real change on the ground via the exclusion of tax dodgers from public procurement, and the enablement of businesses that readily demonstrate responsible tax conduct to compete fairly. Really, really enjoyed doing this TaxTalks podcast with Jeff Hoopes of University of North Carolina and Scott Dyreng of Duke University. We talked about the Fair Tax Foundation: - when and why European journalists started calling out corporate tax avoidance ten years ago - the widely different appetite for tax transparency in Europe and the US, and why this is - why "spirit of the law" matters - like it or not, 100s of US MNCs will be in scope of the EU PCbCR Directive - our desire to see progressive US business secure a Fair Tax Mark label

How do you measure tax fairness? And who gets to decide? In this episode of Tax Chats, Scott Dyreng and I sit down with Paul Monaghan from the Fair Tax Foundation o discuss their efforts to certify corporate tax fairness. We dig into their methodology, the challenges of defining fairness in taxation, and how companies respond to scrutiny. A fascinating discussion for anyone interested in tax transparency, corporate responsibility, or the evolving landscape of tax policy. Also a lot of updates on upcoming changes to tax disclosure. • Because businesses such as Iberdrola, Ørsted, Vattenfall and SSE plc disclosure their public Country-by-Country Reporting, we know the value of corporate tax payments made in the UK and other countries. That's why we think the UK should forge ahead and mandate #pCbCR, like we've been seeing recently in other countries around the globe.

In 2016, the UK government agreed that public Country-by-Country Reporting (pCbCR) of income, profits and taxes by large multinationals was merited, but this power has never been implemented. At the time, politicians said that the UK should wait for other countries to take action too. Now, with legislative progress having been made to mandate versions of this reporting in the EU’s 27 member states and Australia, the UK is well placed to be the next major economy to enact a pCbCR law and continue the push for worldwide corporate tax transparency – especially given that the pressure of being a first mover has eased. Here are the thoughts of Fair Tax Foundation on why this is important – including links to key resources such as our recently updated paper 𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐲-𝐛𝐲-𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠: 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐝 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐭𝐚𝐱𝐞𝐬, and how we can help businesses navigate pCbCR through Fair Tax Mark certification: https://lnkd.in/ePrEjn58

  • 📢 Tax professionals at multinationals: we have lots of resources to help with your public Country-by-Country Reporting. Take a look ⬇️

A recent report from the Global Reporting Initiative has found that public country-by-country reporting (pCbCR) uptake is low among multinationals indicating that they follow the GRI 207 tax transparency standard. The report’s recommendation to consider combining use of GRI 207 with Fair Tax Mark certification is especially welcome, as we at Fair Tax Foundation are eager to help more businesses navigate pCbCR and support their tax data disclosures with meaningful, informative narrative.
