It has always been difficult for people from the UK with any kind of criminal record to visit the USA ...they are more or less barred from getting the visa waiver and have to go through a protracted and expensive visa process. Now the UK has reciprocated! US citizens now have to apply for a new visa waiver to visit the UK. It asks "have you been convicted of a crime in the last 12 months?" and people are already being barred from getting the waiver. This is really sad - preventing people who have been rehabilitated from travelling. Lena Patel Paula Harriott. Encouraging article in the Times https://lnkd.in/esrnddEP with Prisons Minister James Timpson (though really wish Times would use term ex-prisoners rather than ex-convicts). Timpson points out that people who have been in prison are as reliable as other employees. He also points out that 1 in 4 people have criminal records. What article doesn't point out is that minority of those with criminal records have just come out of prison. So if we want to make rehabilitation a reality we need to reform criminal records checks for all - so the person who has a ten year old caution is not discriminated against and the person who went to prison 20 years ago can contemplate volunteering at their grandchild's school www.fairchecks.org.uk
