To print or not to print...
Growing up as a designer in the age of print, I still love opening a box of physical business cards. While I now print as little as possible, I had these beauties printed for my upcoming trip to the WXO - World Experience Organization Summit this week in New York. Sorry if I’ve mentioned that a few times recently, but I am over-excited about it. I printed the cards as this is going to be an incredible moment to connect with fellow experience designers and develop partnerships that I know will last for years. The ritual of handing over a business card is seemingly outdated, replaced with a quick swipe of a LinkedIn QR code, sweeping you into a sea of 1000’s of contacts. The power of a physical memory-jogging object is underestimated. Pigalle Tavakkoli introduced me to this quote in relation to souvenirs: “…what matters is the history of interaction, the associations people have…and the memories they evoke…resulting from…emotion rather than reason…that object is important only as a symbol, of associations.” Don Norman, author of Emotional Design Do you or don’t you print business cards? If you’re going to the WXO summit, I so look forward to seeing you there (and giving you a picture of my mug 😀) #experiencedesigner

We can't own people, but somebody has to own personas.. and maybe HR isn't the best option. Read the third post in our series looking at the power, potential and pitfalls of employee personas. This time, some big red alarm bells around ownership and longevity (including the perils of lift and shift). https://lnkd.in/efUwN6Na #EXpersonas #Employeepersonas #EXdesign #employeeeperience

Why people teams can't get enough of employee personas (the Swiss army knife of EX design) - part two In this post we look at why employee personas are popular in people teams and beyond. Based on conversations with EX designers, researchers and heads of EX, we have grouped the reasons behind the popularity of personas into four areas: 1. Multiple applications 2. Visual appeal 3. Evidence of innovation 4. Easy to create BUT (and it's a big but), just because you can, doesn't mean you should. Read this post to find out when you might want to rethink a decision to create or deploy personas and what some alternatives might be. https://bit.ly/3V6AnAq #employeepersonas #EXdesign #designthinking #employeeexperience

Personas - why are they so hot (and how not to get burnt) For the last few months we have been working on research looking at employee personas (and their close relations archetypes and pen portraits). There is so much said and written about employee personas, but it never really gets under the skin of these powerful tools. The result is that while many organisations are investing in developing employee personas, they are too frequently ill-formed, badly used and quick to die. Worse still, personas can reinforce stereo-types and lead to really bad decisions. That's why we decided to take a closer look. By speaking to EX strategist, designers and researchers we have put together a series of four blog posts looking at: 1. What employee personas are (how they differ to archetypes and pen portraits) and how to put them to work 2. Why employee personas are so popular (and some common pitfalls) 3. Some more persona watch-outs 4. An employee personas checklist - you think you want personas, but do you really need them? https://lnkd.in/da-tMZB3 Check out blog post one now – we will publish the rest of the series over the coming weeks. This has been a hugely collaborative piece of research. And we remain open to hearing all perspectives on this subject, so do share your thoughts and questions. #Employeeexperience #EX #EXdesign #Employeepersonas #EXpersonas #EXstrategy

Interested in using AI when creating proposals? For those who have been using Midjourney or a similar AI image generator for a while, please scroll past this post, as you will know this stuff. But for those who are intrigued to start using AI images for proposals or similar applications, this may interest you. I use AI images mainly when creating proposals. This is because I'm communicating concepts. Concepts like 'multiple people, in a gallery-like space, all working together creating sculptures in pairs'. This image represented an idea for an activity we proposed. The activity was a way to explore and express people's individuality before presenting their objects to the group to show what made them tick. They could then collaborate on an image/sculpture representing their joint uniqueness. The next step was to showcase these images in the metaverse, but that's another story for another post. An image like this needs to be inspiring and get the idea across. It would have taken me hours to find relevant elements of this image and retouch them together in Photoshop. But within around 5 minutes and experimenting with several prompts in Midjourney I had a good selection of images to choose from. Mixing real photography with AI images in a proposal works best. This makes the whole proposal look more realistic. Of course, I still use Photoshop for really specific images, for example, where I need to use the client's branding, but using AI images in the mix saves so much time, which is another important factor when pitching. #midjourney #aiimages #aiforproposals
