At FixFX, we’re always excited to push creative boundaries. One of our projects is Barbara Stepansky’s mesmerising short film, Woman and Elephants. For this film, we took an unconventional approach to visual effects to bring the story’s unique vision to life. Typically, VFX are crafted using cutting-edge digital tools like Nuke or Houdini. However, this scene called for something different. To mirror the main character Gwen’s memory loss and disorientation, the visuals needed to feel raw, archival, and unpredictable. We turned to analogue techniques, processing footage onto VHS tape before running it through a signal manipulation glitch device. By physically twisting dials and flipping switches in real time, we created one-of-a-kind effects that were then recaptured digitally. This hands-on approach gave the visuals a tactile, imperfect quality that software alone couldn’t replicate, perfectly reflecting the story’s emotional core. In Woman and Elephants, Gwen and her partner Paul, life-loggers confined during a global shutdown, are caught in a surreal loop as reality begins to fracture. The film’s themes of memory, love, and isolation have resonated deeply with audiences, earning selections at the Hollywood Shortsfest, Venezia Shorts (Semifinalist), Oregon Short Film Festival, NYC Indie Theatre Film Fest, and Chandler International Film Festival. We are honoured to collaborate with Barbara Stepansky, an acclaimed filmmaker whose career includes a WGA Award, a Nicholl Fellowship, and numerous accolades for her storytelling. Barbara’s passion for innovative filmmaking made this project a perfect match for FixFX.
