We tackle more than just Electrical & Electro-Mechanical problems! Back in August of this year we had the opportunity to support Louis one of our Servo Department team as his sponsor at Newcastle-Under-Lyme Rugby Club. We also learnt that Louis was one of the Coaches for the clubs under 16s team and without hesitation we thought we’ll support them to! Over the weekend we received a Siemens PLC in for repair from a food production site. As an emergency repair it’s come into our Drives & Controls department on our priority workflow. Under assessment Esai has identified that the power board has a faulty bridge rectifier (the element responsible for converting AC supply to DC), blown fuse and transformer. On this occasion we’ve recommended sourcing a replacement PLC over repair. Autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) are common place in distribution hubs, improving efficiency and streamlining processes. No longer the stuff of Sci-fi, these robots, equipped with advanced sensors, machine learning, and AI, are designed to handle tasks such as sorting, picking, packing, and transporting goods. Their ability to operate continuously without fatigue helps reduce operational costs and helps us all receive those impulse purchases on time! I did need another T-handled Allen Key and 10mm socket! The reliance on the constant operation of these robots places significant strain on their servos. Critical components responsible for precise movement and control. Over time, wear and tear can lead to reduced performance or even mechanical failure. To ensure reliability, routine maintenance is essential. This includes regular inspection, cleaning, and calibration of servos to prevent unexpected breakdowns and extend the robots' operational lifespan. By keeping their servos and other components in optimal condition, the lifespan of AMRs can be extended and your operation can continue to run efficiently. 2024 has been a Whirlwind! December already, sure we were only cheering in a new year last week!? The organisations and businesses we work with are at polar opposites this time of year, for some it’s all systems go and others are in their shutdown. Which means we’re busy! Maybe even more productive than the Elves in Santas workshop pushing to get those final gifts wrapped! Distribution & Logistics are areas that really push the limits at this time of year. Putting a lot of strain on their equipment. We’ve plenty of Servo variations & conveyors on priority repair requests to testament to that! What do you think of video inspection reports like this? This is an inspection report of one of two gearboxes that have come to us today, Sunday, for urgent refurbishment. We call these our SERVICEview videos. They are sent to each customer when we’ve assessed, or tested an item sent to us for repair. They’re sent on our own video sharing platform. We quite like them, they’re short, to the point and get the message across. When it comes to Alternators, this one’s quite the unit! Can anyone tell us what it’s off? Don’t worry if you can’t, we’re going to talk about it now. A recent arrival in our Electro-Mechanical Department is this GEC Traction Alternator. For the anoraks out there, this unit is off a 769 class BMU (Bi-mode multiple unit) or what you’d call a train. It’s in with us at Fletcher Moorland for a spot of tlc. Pictured is Jonny, who’s starting the dismantling process. After being broken down, and our initial inspection carried out, we’ll treat it to a steam clean and put it through a stoving process, getting rid of all the contaminants it’s seen after a few hundred thousand miles on the rails. This will of course be complimented by thorough testing. Including, but not restricted to an IR (insulation resistance) test, Baker Surge test and  CMM checks (coordinate measuring). All of this will be done inline with the rail industries, workshop overhaul standard specifications (WOSS) for the necessary procedures. We’re pleased to be working with a wider range of Rail Industry operators, so much so that we’re appointing a sector champion in Jon Rowe 🇬🇧. Strip it down, clean it up, and lay it out. That’s what Mick has done to this wind turbine yaw gearbox. He’ll inspect each part thoroughly before refurbishing the gear unit with new bearings, seals and lubricant. It’ll then be run up on our back drive rig to check all’s ok with it.
