Radical economic thinking

About us

If you think it's easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism, we should talk. Flourish Economics wants to radicalise economic thinking. But the problems of our world run so much deeper than just economics. Collectively can break the myths of mainstream economics, explore emerging alternative economic models and return to ancestral wisdom to dream of our utopia. We can join the dots together to understand how capitalism, patriarchy, racism, imperialism and colonialism have collided to create the polycrises we face today.

  • BONUS Upstream Coffee Club At the last Coffee Club people said they wanted more chances to meet people, chat and just be. So I'm running an extra Coffee Club this month. We'll be talking about one of my favourite Upstream episodes: How we show up with Mia Birdsong. It's about showing up for community, dealing with conflict, holding ourselves and others accountable and asking what energy we are bringing to the movement. Seems apt for this moment. Link to join; https://lu.ma/h2j27g8t Transcripts and summary of the episode available on my website; https://lnkd.in/eubp_SeH

  • Did you know the US military is the largest single institutional source of climate emissions? That it kills millions of marine mammals each year? Is exempt from climate protocols to reduce emissions? Next week's Upstream Coffee Club we'll be talking about Breaking the chains of empire with Abby Martin. In this episode she talks about the links between the US military, climate change, wealth accumulation and growing imperialism. Join us for an informal chat about the podcast, ideas and things it brought up all in community with others. Even if you don't get chance to listen to the episode join us anyway - everyone welcome. Coffee Club is free and online. More info here; https://lnkd.in/eubp_SeH Link to sign up here; https://lu.ma/ync5vczx

  • We've normalised "cost of living" so that anyone that can't afford shelter or food is seen as lazy or immoral. but why are humans the only species on earth that pays money just to exist? That has to sell their labour just to survive? Imagine birds paying the trees for the twigs they make their nests from. Nature understands reciprocity, cycles and mutual indebtedness. Humans understood and lived in harmony with nature for thousands of years, some indigenous cultures still understand the earth. We have much to learn from them 💚

  • At a Climate Change protest this week there was someone with a poster demanding "Tax the rich". This same person bemoaned the amount of Palestinian flags on the march. "I think it sends the wrong message" What message is that exactly? If you want to understand how Climate Change IS linked to Gaza and the military industrial complex listen to the Upstream podcast episode with Abby Martin "Breaking the Chains of Empire" then join the Upstream Coffee Club on Tuesday 10th December to discuss. Coffee Club is free, hosted on Zoom and everyone is welcome. Scan QR code or join here; https://lu.ma/ync5vczx #upstreampodcast #upstream #empire #abbymartin #climatechange

  • Would anyone be interested in some sessions focussed around these three elements; * Wonder * Rage * Breathe I've been thinking about how to spread some hope after sensing growing despair and I think growing together in community offers one way to do this. I will set up the first session for a couple of weeks time 💚

“THE FUTURE IS DARK. What if this is not the darkness of the tomb – but the darkness of the womb? What if this is our GREATEST TRANSITION?” -Valarie Kaur I have written several posts exploring ways to #transition this #metacrisis during the last two weeks. In retrospect, Three of them contained certain patterns at the HEART of this post: Wonder, Rage & Breath. ⭕ WONDER: The wonder of discovering that there are alternatives. https://lnkd.in/eVCrqK3y ⭕ RAGE: The rage of a rebel and how to rebel with a sense of HopePunk https://lnkd.in/eET-W4Fb ⭕ BREATH: Stop at this moment of your life and ask yourself these three questions: Where Do I Come From? Who am I? Where am I Going? https://lnkd.in/dmyBeaVy What I didn't know, and this is the conundrum of emergence, is that if you follow the paths of this triad, they produce #JOY as the last layer of this Revolutionary Love Compass indicates. So it was with great joy & curiosity that I discovered this week one of the latest articles from ‘The Alternative’ (UK) that told us how:  "Sikh-American activist Valerie Kaur has taken a bus across forty US states on her ‘Revolutionary Love’ tour. And she uses this compass..." Exploring that post I have discovered this tool and valuable resources (Links in comments) for that revolutionary transition that starts from three practices with three dimensions each. They are an enigmatic ‘Nine’ that also came to me in one of the posts of those weeks by linking the 9 human needs with the enneagram. https://lnkd.in/dUmm-va8 ❤️ LOVE FOR OTHERS How do we love others? The “other” is anyone or anything outside your sense of self –a person, an animal, a part of the earth. This practice is called SEE NO STRANGER. ❤️ LOVE FOR OPPONENTS Turn the compass to an opponent. An opponent is anyone whose beliefs, ideas, or actions oppose your own. There are no monsters in this world, only human beings who are wounded. This practice is called TEND THE WOUND. Note that it begins with tending your own wound. ❤️ LOVE FOR OURSELVES Point the compass to yourself. How do we love ourselves? This practice is inspired by the wisdom of the midwife: BREATHE AND PUSH. It is a rhythm to sustain our energy in any long labor. “The opposite of love is not rage. The opposite of #love is indifference. Love engages all our emotions: Joy is the gift of love. Grief is the price of love. Anger is the force that protects that which is loved. We cannot access the depth of loving ourselves or others without our rage.”

Imagineer | Storyteller | Barefoot Economist - cultivating our radical collective imaginations in a time of transition

Can economies be beautiful? Can economies speak to us about affection? Can economies offer us a sense of belonging, identity and participation? What if I told you that there was a way of thinking, speaking and feeling about the economy that included all of the above and more? In my Beautiful Economies Learning Lab we dive deep into the stories we tell ourselves about the economy, what an economy is actually for, and how to grow systems that align with our values. Our next Lab starts next Monday at 10am UK time and we have a few spaces left. See the website for more details: https://lnkd.in/egxDvHz2 Look forward to exploring economics 'from the inside out' with you! #beautifuleconomies #affection #solidarity #identity #humanneeds #learning
