It is with regret that we announce that Peter Strevens, the former Chairman and Managing Director of Ford & Slater, passed away on Thursday 13th February 2025 after a short period of illness, aged 86 years. After a long and successful period as Managing Director of the automotive division of Coalite Group plc, Peter initially joined Ford & Slater in 1991 as interim Managing Director when the company was under the ownership of Leyland DAF. Ford & Slater had been through successive owners that did not really understand truck dealerships before Leyland DAF stepped-in; business confidence was not high and in a world before email, Teams and mobile phones, communication was difficult during the severe recession of the early 1990s. In April 1992, Peter Strevens purchased Ford & Slater - the business comprising the Leicester, Peterborough, Lincoln and Donington dealerships. Leyland DAF gave Peter the opportunity to become the business owner and trusted partner to the very best truck manufacturer. The opportunity was seized enthusiastically, and it significantly changed the life and direction of Peter and his family. The 1990s were not easy for truck dealerships. In the early years, Peter lived on-site and he would regularly catch up with the Leicester HGV Night Shift. He served as Chairman of the DAF Dealer Association between 1995 – 1998 and represented Ford & Slater on the National Dealer Council for many years. He also served as a Non-Executive Trustee of the Leicestershire Health Authority between 1995 - 1999. Peter demonstrated a very strong work ethic and worked long hours throughout his career. He recognised the enormous contribution people made to the success of a company, the need to always be considerate of their feelings and to make them feel valued. He would always take the time to walk around the whole site when visiting dealerships. Over subsequent years there was a phased transition of the management and ownership of Ford & Slater to Tim and Nigel Strevens who joined the company in 1995 and 2004, respectively. With the help of many excellent and dedicated colleagues, wonderful loyal customers and our strong relationship with DAF Trucks, Ford & Slater has grown from 4 to 16 dealerships, as well as adding Massey Truck Engineering and DAF Fleet Services. In later life, Peter and Janet enjoyed visits to Cornwall and spending time with their grandchildren, but he retained a keen interest in staying up to date with business developments. Peter and the family were very touched to receive so many kind words, warm and generous letters, messages and phone calls during the past few months. He was respected for his humble, polite and kind manner throughout his long life, and always in his dealings with others, and will be missed by all who knew him.
