The climate and nature emergency is hitting the Global South the hardest, but we can still create a liveable planet for all. The FCDO is working with the C40 Cities Finance Facility (CFF) to close the climate finance gap for cities across Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and Latin America. Through UK International Climate Finance (ICF) we're powering green growth in developing countries and building resilience to climate change.
Exciting News for Cities Committed to Climate Action We’re thrilled to share that the C40 Cities Finance Facility’s (CFF) latest Call for City Applications is officially open, following the announcement by the Honorable Mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes, at the Urban 20 Summit this past weekend. The announcement, at a session around Financing Multi-Level Climate Action on 16 November, brought together mayors and representatives from Development Finance Institutions (DFIs) to discuss how to bridge the urban climate finance gap and increase funding for cities tackling the climate crisis. In his remarks at the launch, Mayor Paes emphasized the need for a financing system that better serves cities, as they are on the frontlines of climate impacts and best positioned to set priorities for action. So far, the CFF has helped 30 cities mobilize $650m in climate investments and is on course to leverage over $1bn by 2025. This launch opens a new chapter for cities across the Global South, providing essential project preparation support to transform ambitious climate action plans into finance-ready, resilient urban infrastructure projects. As an UNFCCC award-winning project preparation facility, the CFF supports cities by providing technical assistance, capacity building, and access to experts to develop urban infrastructure projects in the following areas; 🌱 Nature-based solutions 💡 Energy and buildings 🚶 Urban mobility 💧 Water and waste management We will be accepting applications for a first cohort of city projects up to 15th February 2025, so apply soon – www.c40cff.org/apply With support from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), USAID, and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, the CFF empowers cities to tackle urgent climate challenges and make a real difference in the lives of their residents. The CFF is implemented by C40 Cities and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH

Back in 2019, with the vital backing of our supporters and the UK Government (through the UK Aid Match scheme), we embarked on a mission to empower over 34,000 people in North Darfur, Sudan. Amidst conflict and a changing climate, we are supporting communities to create sustainable livelihoods and thrive. Why this matters As world leaders gather for COP29 in Baku, increased funding for climate-smart agriculture has never been more urgent. Supporting communities on the frontlines of climate change can break cycles of drought, conflict, and poverty. By investing in resilient farming, water access, and income diversification, we can empower these communities to adapt to an uncertain future. Our impact so far: 🚰 Water Security: A new dam holding 103,000 cubic meters of water now benefits over 1,500 farms, bringing critical resources to more than 800 women-headed households. 👩🌾 Sustainable Farming: 375 farmers trained in climate-smart techniques have tripled their crop yields, significantly enhancing food security and incomes. 💃 Women’s Empowerment: 65 women trained in agro-processing have shared skills with 234 others, many now earning income by selling local products. 🐄 Improved Livestock Health: 25 trained community animal health workers have treated over 10,000 animals, sustaining essential pastoralist livelihoods. 🙏 Conflict Reduction: By demarcating migratory routes and shared water points, alongside peacebuilding workshops, tensions between farmers and pastoralists have eased. 🌳 Environmental Protection: Planting 2,000 trees and constructing 2,100 terraces are key steps to combat desertification and protect farmland. This project highlights the powerful impact of climate funding and collaboration. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has made this possible.
