Today marks the beginning of Raw Materials Week in Brussels—the largest EU policy event on raw materials. Indigenous peoples’ lands hold many of the minerals that will be considered critical to the energy transition, yet their rights have often been repeatedly violated in the process. The SIRGE Coalition is hosting a side event on 12th December, to discuss how the EU’s Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA) can adopt a rights-based approach that ensures the meaningful involvement of Indigenous Peoples and respects their rights. This event will highlight why the meaningful participation of Indigenous Peoples in CRMA implementation is essential for shaping a just and sustainable future for EU citizens and beyond. Working with forest peoples to secure their rights
About us
Forest Peoples Programme supports the rights of peoples who live in forests and depend on them for their livelihoods. We work to create political space for forest peoples to secure their rights, control their lands and decide their own futures. Forest Peoples Programme (FPP) was founded in 1990 in response to the forest crisis, specifically to support indigenous forest peoples’ struggles to defend their lands and livelihoods. It registered as a non-governmental human rights Dutch Stichting in 1997, and then later, in 2000, as a UK charity, No. 1082158 and a company limited by guarantee (England & Wales) Reg. No. 3868836, with a registered office in the UK.

Amidst the political turmoil and uncertainty caused by the proposal to delay the #EU Regulation on Deforestation-free Products (EUDR), the European Commission’s multistakeholder platform on deforestation is meeting today to continue discussing the implementation of the regulation. Proactive consultation and inclusion of indigenous peoples and forest peoples is often lacking in these processes even though their perspectives are crucially needed to shape the impacts of these policies on the ground. "You can’t have spaces, like the previous meeting of EU Indonesia-Malaysia Joint Task Force on deforestation, where only industry interests are inside the room. Task force and working groups need to have indigenous peoples, local communities and smallholders as top priority members of these groups." - Norman Jiwan, Dayak indigenous leader from Indonesia For the EUDR to create real change and meet its objectives, the EU needs to make sure that the voices of indigenous peoples and forest peoples are central to any discussion relating to its implementation. Join SIRGE at EU Raw Materials Coalition's #RawMaterialsWeek for an event on ensuring Indigenous Peoples' rights and fair sharing in Europe's Critical Raw Materials Act implementation. 🌍 This event will explore how the EU’s Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA) can integrate a rights-based approach that ensures the meaningful involvement of Indigenous Peoples and respects their rights. Highlighting examples from the Sami Peoples in Sweden and the Lithium Triangle as exemplified by the situation of Indigenous Peoples in Argentina, the discussion will address challenges such as water insecurity, gaps in Free, Prior, and Informed Consent, and the need for fair benefit-sharing. Furthermore, the main messages of the recently launched report of the Business and Human Rights Resource Center and IPRI, "Exploring Shared Prosperity: Indigenous Leadership and Partnerships for a Just Transition," will be shared. With 54% of energy transition minerals located on or near Indigenous Peoples’ lands, meaningful participation of Indigenous Peoples in the CRMA implementation is critical to shaping a just and sustainable future for the European Union citizens and beyond. 📅 December 12, 2024 🕒 11:30-12:30 CET 📍 Hotel Colonies Rue du Progres 9, Brussels ➡️ Register here: https://lnkd.in/dvQy83qp #RawMaterialsWeek2024 #IndigenousRights #IndigenousPeoples #JustTransition

The CBD COP16 may have ended a month ago, but the work of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities extend way beyond these annual international conferences. So here is another interview I did in Cali, with a young advocate determined to take part in UN processes despite the challenges she faces: Daisy Chepkopus. 🎧 Find more interviews on my YouTube playlist, amplifying the demands and priorities of youth, women and Indigenous Peoples from the heart of the Blue Zone at COP16 (5min max): https://lnkd.in/e3cme_6y 🌿 Daisy is a young Pokot woman from Kenya, who is both involved at the local level with her community and in international policy spaces, such as the UN Biodiversity Conference #COP16. She shares about what has helped her to navigate the complex language and codes of the CBD (Convention on Biological Diversity), why she loves working with the youth, and the connection between revitalizing culture and protecting biodiversity. Daisy works as Program Officer for the Indigenous Information Network (IIN). #IndigenousPeoples #IndigenousKnowledge #IndigenousYouth #IndigenousWomen #Kenya #Pokot #UnitedNations #COP16Colombia #biodiversity #stewardship #GenerationRestoration Forest Peoples Programme

In 2019 the #Zero #Tolerance #Initiative was born in Geneva, created by #human #rights activists, and #indigenous #leaders fighting violence and killings in supply chains, many of which lead to our markets. #Quinto #Inuma #Alvarado was there in Geneva, co-founded the #ZTI and served on it's Steering Committee until, in 2023, exactly a year ago today, he was killed. "it is why we are threatened, because we are resisting" Quinto, 2022 Today, and every day, the ZTI and all its members remember Quinto and the very many people who have faced the same threats, the same violence and - for far too many - the same death. Today marks one year since the murder of Quinto Inuma Alvarado, who was a Peruvian indigenous leader and environmental human rights defender part of the Steering Group of the Zero Tolerance Initiative (ZTI). Quinto was brutally murdered in the context of his tireless defense of the human rights of his people and the collective protection of the lands of his community Santa Rosillo de Yanayacu. #NewGuide - Indigenous peoples and forest peoples are frequently confronted with human rights violations and environmental damage caused by companies. The EU has passed two new pieces of legislation that could offer them options to recourse and remedy if the companies are linked to the EU: - EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) places conditions on the sale in the EU of commodities closely linked to deforestation - EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) imposes obligations on (very) large companies based in or operating in the EU to conduct human rights and environmental due diligence But how can #IndigenousPeoples and forest peoples use them to protect their rights?
