As part of National Tree Week, we’re launching a Tree Species Guide for UK Agroforestry Systems 🎉 This practical guide, has been created in partnership with the University of Reading and identifies 33 tree and shrub species suitable for planting on agricultural land. It helps farmers choose the right trees for their unique site conditions and needs, considering factors such as: 🌱 Tree height & canopy cover 🌱 Growth rate 🌱 Pest & disease resilience 🌱 Climate and site tolerances 🎥 Watch our Senior Scientist, Alice Broome, share insights about the guide and its role in supporting sustainable farming and forestry. 🌐 Explore the guide: https://ow.ly/FnYb50UfEO0 @scottishforestry Forestry Commission @forestryandlandscotland #NationalTreeWeek #Agroforestry #TreePlanting

Katty’s passion for moth recording has significantly advanced our understanding of moth distribution in East Lothian. Through her innovative use of mobile trapping, she has discovered numerous new species, including some never before recorded in Scotland. 🦋 #NBNAwards #Biodiversity #Moths

📊🌳 Hardwood price-size curves show the expected value for standing sales for selected tree species at different average sizes, including oak, ash, beech and sycamore. Our new report for the 2023 calendar year, produced in association with Grown in Britain is available now. Robert Hattersley, Forest Research Economist, explains how providing the data can help create healthier woodlands and more planting in the future. 📢 We're recruiting for an exciting new #PhD project in #mountain #woodland restoration! "The genetic diversity and adaptive potential of mountain birch in Scotland for high-altitude nature recovery". This IAPETUS studentship will use molecular genomics, common garden trials & field experiments to study the gene flow, distribution, morphology and ecological diversity between and within mountain birch populations to underpin restoration management with science. Combining research & practice, the project is based at the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH) & University of Stirling, in collaboration with Forest Research, Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, & CASE Partners National Trust for Scotland & #Corrour. Welcome to our 3rd cohort of interns at Forest Research and Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew who are already hard at work on their projects. At Kew, we have Apoorva, who is working on ash genome annotation, Cas is making maps of healthy mature elms and Catherine is carrying out genomic analysis of disease-resistance in elms. At Forest Research our interns are all working with our PhD students. Jack is carrying out social science fieldwork on elm, Joshua is working on a pine disease caused by a nematode and Katy is working on risks from a bacterial disease. Our annual internship programme gives early career scientists and social scientists the opportunity to explore careers in tree health and forest protection.

    Director European Forest Institute

Helsinki Forest Talks: Forests at the Limit – Climate Change and the Future of Forests in Europe On 14 November 2024, the third Helsinki Forest Talk was organised in collaboration between the British Embassy, Embassy of Switzerland in Finland and the European Forest Institute. The event gathered scientists, experts, and members of the diplomatic corps at the British Embassy in Helsinki to explore the pressing challenges of climate change on Europe’s forests. Titled "Forests at the Limit: Climate Change and the Future of Forests in Europe," the event highlighted the impacts of climate change on forests, particularly those at the edge of their natural ranges in alpine and arctic regions. The event was opened by Ms. Kirsti Bourret, Deputy Head of Mission at the British Embassy, and moderated by Mr. Robert Mavsar from the European Forest Institute (EFI). Ms. Magda Bou Dagher Kharrat, Principal Scientist at EFI, provided thought-provoking insights into strategies for adaptation and resilience, including the concept of assisted migration—helping tree species move to more suitable climates to ensure their survival. A lively panel discussion followed, moderated by Ms. Helga Puelzl, Assistant Director at EFI. Panelists included: Mr. Tom Locatelli, Senior Scientist, Forest Research (UK) Ms. Clémence Dirac Dirac Ramohavelo, Head of Section for Forest Ecosystem Services, Federal Office of the Environment (Switzerland) Ms. Anne Tolvanen, Programme Director for Climate Smart Carbon Cycle Research at LUKE (Finland) The event concluded with closing remarks by H.E. Sabrina Dallafior Matter, Swiss Ambassador to Finland. The event underscored the importance of fostering dialogue and raising awareness about the vulnerabilities of Europe’s forests. By bringing diverse perspectives to the table, the event highlighted the need for collaborative and innovative approaches to support forest resilience and sustainability in the face of climate change. Engaging in these critical conversations is essential for building the collective understanding and action required to protect our forests and biodiversity.
