Foster + Partners opens new office in Seoul’s Jongno District. Foster + Partners has opened a new office in Seoul, South Korea’s capital and largest city. The office is located within Samcheong-dong, a vibrant neighbourhood that is characterised by its wide array of artistic and cultural landmarks. An existing three-story building on leafy Samcheong-ro has been transformed into a state-of-the-art workspace, which will support the practice’s ongoing work in the region. The Seoul studio is supporting the development of several major projects in the city, which are currently confidential. The practice has previously completed a number of projects in Seoul, including Apple Myeongdong, which occupies the full width of a city block in the bustling neighbourhood; Hankook Technodome in Daejeon, a 98,000-square-metre research and development facility that attracts the industry’s top talent; and Hankook Technoplex in Pangyo, which reflects Hankook’s development as a global brand and echoes its excellence in engineering. “Our new office is in the historic centre of Seoul and only a stone’s throw from some of its most spectacular landmarks – from Gyeongbokgung Palace to the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. It is a great privilege to be working at the heart of this inspiring city, which perfectly balances history, art, culture, and cutting-edge innovation.” Se Kwan Kim, Partner at Foster + Partners. Magnificent ginkgo trees on Samcheong-ro inject colour into the new office space and change through the seasons. The building features bright and spacious open-plan workspaces, formal meeting rooms, and social areas for employees to enjoy together. 🔗 Find out more: https://brnw.ch/21wP3hl © Studio GRAFFITO #Architecture #Design #Construction #Seoul

Yesterday we had the privilege of welcoming renowned physicist and Nobel Laureate, Professor Sir Konstantin Novoselov to Foster + Partners’ London campus for an inspiring talk on ‘Materials for the Future.’ Professor Novoselov, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2010, alongside Andre Gei, for their groundbreaking work on graphene, discussed designing materials with dynamic, biologically inspired properties—such as self-healing, memory functions and adaptability to external conditions. His presentation opened up discussions on creating artificial living systems and their transformative applications. “Today’s materials are predominantly defined by their properties, which are independent of time and environment. In many cases, such stability is useful, as it makes the behaviour of devices based on such materials robust and predictable. But what if we had a free hand to design any materials we want, with any properties we want – what kind of materials from our dreams we would design? One of the dreams are materials which have some characteristics of biological systems: those with self-healing capabilities, with memory functions, those which can evolve differently depending on external conditions. I will be discussing the methodologies to design such artificial living systems and the areas of their applications.” #InnovationInDesign #FutureMaterials #SustainableInnovation #Graphene #Architecture #Sustainability #SmartMaterials

Curious about the significance of Transit-Oriented Development and its role in creating sustainable urban environments? On 20 November Colin Ward, Senior Partner at Foster + Partners presented on ‘Urban Connectivity – Architecture and the City’ at the PT. MRT Jakarta TOD Fair. Through exploring the role of architecture in enhancing urban connectivity, particularly in the context of the new MRT Jakarta line, Colin presented case studies on how thoughtful design around transport hubs can improve accessibility, reduce congestion, and create more liveable cities. ‘Asia has an intergenerational connectivity and an emphasis on both family and tradition. Looking at that familiarity and the relationships that exist in Asia tells you how to design developments in Jakarta that would be very different from other locations… Looking at the history of Indonesian architecture, families and working cycles, I am a big believer that you can come up with a very interesting and unique design approach.’ 🎥 Watch the recording of Colin presenting from 00:43:58 and speaking as part of a panel discussion from 02:11:00 on the MRTv YouTube channel: https://brnw.ch/21wOONM #Architecture #Construction #Design #MRTJakarta #TODFair #TODFair2024 #IncreasingMobility

Designs revealed for Bilaj Al Jazayer Beach masterplan in Bahrain. Foster + Partners’ Bilaj Al Jazayer Beach masterplan will create a dynamic new destination on Bahrain’s southwest coast. Spanning 3.5 kilometres of beachfront, the walkable mixed-use district provides new homes, hotels and retail, alongside public green spaces and state-of-the-art amenities. Drawing inspiration from Miami’s low-rise Art Deco buildings and Bahrain’s traditional vernacular, the masterplan puts forward a multi-layered and human-centric approach to architectural design. Learning from Bahrain’s traditional passive design strategies, the mixed-use neighbourhoods feature shaded green courtyards and alleyways, which provide cool outdoor spaces for everyone to enjoy. The centrepiece of the masterplan is a public surf park, which uses state-of-the-art wave generating technology to replicate the natural ocean environment on land. “We are creating a green and walkable community on the beach, which offers a range of crafted experiences for residents and visitors. The permeable development features tree-lined streets, shaded courtyards, and a spectacular public park that directly connects with the waterfront. Needless to say, the west-facing district will also offer some of the best sunset views in Bahrain.” Gerard Evenden, Head of Studio at Foster + Partners. The masterplan framework has been developed for Edamah, a leading real estate investment and development company that is committed to creating sustainable, high-quality developments, which enhance Bahrain’s urban landscape. 🔗 Read the full article: https://brnw.ch/21wOM4Y #Architecture #Design #Construction #MixedUse #Masterplan #BilajAlJazayerBeachMasterplan
