As part of our Crowdcube success story series, it was an absolute pleasure to chat with FRAHM Jacket founder Nick Hussey. 🧥
We spoke to Nick all about his journey as a founder, Frahm’s journey as a business - and how he and Frahm are not only addressing gaps in the jacket market, but also doing amazing work to help address the mental health crisis.
We also discussed why honesty is the best policy for founders, and how he has built a deeply engaged community of customers and brand advocates. 💡

What inspired you to start your business?
💬 “Seemingly different passions in my life. The first is mental health, as I suffered a mental breakdown and became suicidal in 2017. I wanted to help more men talk, to save lives and not suffer like I did. I also cannot bear poor quality clothing that doesn't work, and I'm obsessed by jackets. Thus I launched a new kind of men's brand, talking about 'real life' as being tough and beautiful, not always perfect, and upgrading classic jacket designs, that are tough and beautiful, for real life.”
What was a significant challenge you faced when launching your startup?
💬”I wanted to bootstrap FRAHM (which I did for the first 4 years, reaching £1m revenue) but had no funds of my own. I decided I would sell by pre-order, by creating more demand than supply. That funded FRAHM, but it also prevents over-buying, margin erosion, thus protects the brand, is sustainable AND actually drives sales, as it creates 'fear of missing out!”
How has community played a role in your business’s growth?
💬 “I/we have an incredibly trusting, peer-to-peer equal relationship with our customers. There's no veneer, we admit when we mess up, and talk honestly about those ups and downs. Thus, we have extremely strong engagement, lifetime value and word of mouth. This also means they were keen to invest in FRAHM, and become owners of FRAHM with me.”
What advice would you give to others looking to build a community around their product or service?
Be absolutely truthful (which only works if you have a great product!!) Show the ups and downs. A perfect picture is an edited, hidden picture. Humans buy from and invest in humans. Tell your story. Be human. Treat your customers as you would want to be treated. You will earn respect. They will want to support you, as you have supported them.
What advice would you give to someone looking to crowdfund?
Tell your story! Be yourself. Don't be too slick. All investors, whether huge VCs or private individuals, look to founders in deciding whether to invest. So get yourself out there! Oh, and don't use library pictures - be authentic and unique!
