‘I used to close my eyes and I would see entire planets covered in this ultramarine blue pigment.’ A pioneer of the light and space and land art movements, Lita Albuquerque has always made work in dialogue with the environment and natural forces. We visit her home in Los Angeles and her nearby land piece ‘Malibu Line’ (2024), which marks the landscape with the artist’s signature blue pigment in an ancient gesture of protection. ‘I feel that Los Angeles will be forever changed after this,’ says Guinevere Alcaraz. ‘But to see the response of the city has been so inspiring.’ The 2025 Deutsche Bank Frieze Los Angeles Film Award Fellow is talking about the recent Los Angeles fires, but the comment profoundly applies to the theme of this year’s competition – ‘Togetherness’. The six LA-based filmmakers talk about it and their films in this video. ‘Sexy Villains’ by Guinevere Alcaraz follows two friends on a chaotic night out in LA. ‘Grief Cannot Exist Without Joy’ by Ja’Lisa Arnold focuses on the bond between a musician and his dead brother. ‘Red Pocket’ by Austin Chen is about a family dinner interrupted by a surreal windfall. ‘The Pit’ by Nicole Mairose Dizon is a meditative portrait of a Californian mining community. ‘Reprogrammed’ by Christopher Guerrero looks at a young woman creating an artificial intelligence. ‘Estrella’ by Sophia Lafaurie-Muñoz features a cosmic journey for a young girl and her animated guide. To watch all the films and vote in the Audience Award go to https://lnkd.in/et9hf3Vr (closes February 17) ‘With everything that’s going on in the world,’ says DB Film Award Fellow Ja’Lisa Arnold, ‘it’s more important than ever to be telling stories.’ #FriezeLA #Frieze LAFilmAward #deutschebankcollection #positiveimpact

‘In LA, you’re surrounded by different edges …’ Buckle up as Frieze Los Angeles director Christine Messineo and 2025 ‘Focus’ curator Essence Harden use their regular shared drives – including a pitstop at In-N-Out Burger – to discuss how the geography of the city informs its artists and how its diverse expanse prompts journeys of exploration and discovery. ‘… that’s kind of the nature of Los Angeles.’ Christine Messineo and Essence Harden wear Stone Island and drive the BMW 760i xDrive As the Official Partner of ‘Focus’, Stone Island provides each participating gallery with a bursary, helping to support the next generation of contemporary artists and art spaces. #FriezeLA -- Photographer/director: Nick Brinley DP: Natasha Abdul 1st AC: Jewel Perez Sound: Jacob Elliot @locationsoundmixer Edit & Grade: @weekendposthouse
