  • LinkedIn's 2024 Green Skills Report says that demand for workers with green skills in the UK grew by 46% last year. Globally, there aren't enough workers with the right skills (and most 'green' skills are really those same skills we have today, which are already in shortage) and the report says the pool of talent must – at a minimum – double by 2050 to keep apace with projected demand. We know this is an ongoing issue in our sector, and we hope to see an increase in policy changes to encourage more people to join the sector, as well as more visibility of the non-academic career pathways such as apprenticeships and other vocational training which are so vital to our work and all manufacturing. #greenskills

🏭 Industry on Teesside 🏭 Great to visit Teesside-based Exolum, and meet their NW Europe Lead Stephen Land and Global Strategy Lead, Ignacio Casajus. Exolum are one of the world’s leading energy logistics companies, delivering fuel across the globe 🌍 ✈️ 4/10 flights taking off from the UK each year use fuel from Exolum, and if you’re flying back to Teesside on our NEW FLIGHT from Malaga all the fuel for that flight will have come from them! 🇪🇸 💪 Their Seal Sands and Riverside fuel and chemical storage sites have long played a proud role in Teesside’s industrial history – and are set to play a leading role in the future too. They will be building one of the UK’s leading hydrogen refuelling stations at their Riverside terminal, as part of their wider plans to help decarbonise Britain’s trucks and buses 🚚 🇬🇧 More good news. More Global Investment in Teesside 👊

    CEO at Fuels Industry UK

I had a good feeling that the first Jet Zero Taskforce Plenary was going to go well when I noticed our on point brand alignment... There was great consensus in the room that enabling Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) to be manufactured in the UK is very important. This means looking at the economics of its manufacture. To manufacture SAF in an economic way, other lower carbon fuels are produced as a by product. If we want SAF to be manufactured in UK, we need a market for these other lower carbon fuels, which could play a much greater role in the efficient decarbonisation of transport.

Interesting read from Zemo Partnership last week, as they published their Delivery Roadmap for Net Zero Transport. A few of the welcome conclusions that jumped out at me: ✅ Higher UK biofuel blends are needed. With stronger targets, companies like Exolum can better plan investment in logistics infrastructure to help deliver biofuels as efficiently as possible. ✅ Encourage the development & use of drop-in biofuels. Uptake of HVO in particular is proving increasingly popular, with Exolum recently expanding our capacity on Merseyside in response to this. ✅ The Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom should have a clear low carbon fuels strategy. Long-term direction of policy is an increasingly important factor investment decisions by companies like Exolum Thanks to Zemo Partnership & colleagues at Fuels Industry UK who took part in this work on our behalf via the Council for Net Zero Transport. Zemo Partnership today publishes a Delivery Roadmap for Net Zero Transport in the UK which sets out the interventions required across key policy areas to bring forward investment in zero emission technologies and low carbon fuels and promote low carbon travel choices. The Roadmap is the culmination of well over a year of consultation with the widest range of stakeholders in road transport’s decarbonisation transition, and takes an economy-wide, whole-systems approach to making net zero transport happen. It encompasses policies on upgrading the electricity grid, enhancing the UK’s skills base and opening up green finance. The commitment to increase the UK’s target for greenhouse gas emissions reductions to 81% by 2035 (vs 1990 levels) is ambitious but currently unmatched by the domestic policies necessary to achieve the target. This enhanced target demands even greater urgency in delivering emissions reductions from road transport and new policies to address the barriers to rapid transport decarbonisation are required. The Roadmap points to the areas where these policy interventions are most urgently needed. We would like to extend our thanks to all Zemo members who have contributed to the Roadmap. We look forward to working with you on future updates of the Roadmap and in further development of policy proposals. You can read and download a copy of the Roadmap below. • Read our response to the Industrial Strategy Green Paper consultation. Our key points from the response are: ⏩ It is important that the fuels sector be recognised in the industrial strategy for the benefits it brings to the economy, both as a potential driver of growth in clean energy technologies (CCUS, hydrogen and lower carbon fuels) and given that it can deliver against all of the Green Paper’s objectives of delivering net zero, regional growth, and economic security and resilience. Our response also made clear that it is also well above the average in terms of UK productivity -a key driver of growth. ⏩ The sector is a foundational sector that enables potential growth by other sectors. There is a reliance on fuels and other products we manufacture and deliver such as plastics, solvents, lubricants and more without which the UK will be less able to secure growth.   ⏩ The industrial strategy must seek to address the current barriers to investment in the UK which include: high carbon and energy costs; old models of regulation that slow down the net zero transition; not considering full lifecycle emissions, particularly in the transport sector; current shortages in workforce skills to deliver net zero. Great to join Exolum's very own Yufan Cai at this Spanish Chamber of Commerce in the United Kingdom event this week, as she took some questions from the Financial Times' Peter Foster, and to hear Douglas Alexander offer his view on the importance Anglo-Spanish investment. As Yufan Cai set out, there are 3 areas of focus for Exolum when it comes to our work in NW Europe: 1️⃣ Making ongoing investments in our existing pipeline & storage network, which delivers fuel for 4/10 flights leaving the UK & holds an exciting future for the role of #SustainableAviationFuel. 2️⃣ Acquiring additional capabilities to move molecules, such as through our innovative #hydrogen projects at Tees Valley & Immingham. 3️⃣ Exploring new options for logistics, through partnerships like that recently announced in Spain with Tecnicas Reunidas for carbon capture & storage. If you'd like to learn more, get in touch!📱 📧 Thanks to Igor Urra, Rebecca Wall & the rest of the SCC team for putting on a great event. #WeAreExolum #NetZero #Innovation #Partnerships #SAF #Sustainability #Aviation #hydrogen #ccus Stephen Land Ignacio Casajus Gorka Penalva Alex Ellis Ignacio Hernández Hurtado Oran Willson James Baker Fuels Industry UK Peter Davidson Nunzia Florio Tank Storage Association Clare Jackson Brett Ryan Hydrogen UK

We participated in and sponsored the launch event of the annual Barometer on the climate and outlook for Spanish investment in the 🇬🇧 The UK is our second largest market. That's why we are proud to play a leading role in the Cámara de Comercio de España sponsoring its annual Barometer on the climate and outlook for Spanish investment in the UK. At the launch event in London, our Finance Director for North West Europe, Yufan Cai, took part in a panel discussion with Financial Times journalist Peter Foster in which he explained the three key areas in which we want to invest in order to accelerate the transition to a more sustainable society. Cai highlighted the importance of strengthening our existing infrastructure to process more biofuels, such as PAS, acquiring new capabilities in emerging businesses, such as hydrogen logistics, and investing in research and development in new areas, such as storage and utilisation of carbon capture. Thanks to the Chambers of Commerce of both countries for inviting us - see you next year! #WeAreExolum #NetZero #SAF #Sustainability #Hydrogen
