Industrial companies typically have 2 options for their waste water: Pay lots of money for someone to truck it away, or pay a high upfront to build a treatment unit on site. Even then, the popular method of anaerobic digestion as a means of converting this waste into value, is prohibitively expensive for many. This week we spoke to Dr. Thomas Fudge, CEO at WASE, whose modular waste-to-energy solution boosts energy production by 30% and treats waste up to 10x faster than traditional anaerobic digestion, also taking up 70% less space! 4 big takeaways from our recent episode with Oliver Lancaster, CEO at IGEM: 1. Planning comprehensively for hydrogen integration is key. If not done correctly, the consequences could be dire. We need a well-coordinated plan for all levels – local, regional, and national – to ensure that the system works as a cohesive whole. 2. Industries and networks need a few years of preparation for the gas changeover, signalling the importance of a thorough and well-communicated strategic plan. 3. Hydrogen production should ideally commence at points of higher pressure on the system, feeding downward. This method optimises the flow and ensures readiness across the network. 4. Many industries are keen to understand their specific role in hydrogen integration. Industries with local electricity generation, facing constraints, are asking if they can utilise hydrogen within their existing networks.
